This is the first of the three novels that deal with Arnold Zeck.

It's a good story.

Mr Pritchard's narration is growing on me; he's a pretty good Nero Wolfe.

I enjoy Agatha Christie, and I have all of these stories in book form. It is great to have them in a dramatized form as well, and I think John Moffat does a good job as Poirot.

These dramatizations seem to follow the books closely. (unlike some TV adaptations!)

This collection includes John Moffat's first radio appearance (The Murder of Roger Acroyd).

One tiny drawback is that some of the shows were done as 5-episode shows, and others were a single episode dramatization; however, the multi-episode shows here seem to have been knitted together into one big episode; this may or may not be an issue for some... it appears as if the name of each episode has been removed from this... when one ends, there is a slight pause, then music, then a summary, and the episode continues.

The multi-episodic shows on this collection are:
Death on the Nile
Peril at End House
Murder on the Orient Express
Three Act Tragedy
The Mysterious Affair at Styles

I like this story, and I was pleased to get it as an audio book.

I've read most of the books; I have seen parts of the TV series, but I don't know if I've seen a complete show, so most of my knowledge comes from the books.

In general, the narration (with two exceptions) is good. Unfortunately, the two exceptions are the main characters of Perry Mason and Della Street.

I'm used to hearing the late Raymond Burr doing Perry Mason, but even setting that aside, when reading, one gets an idea of what the characters should sound like, and the Perry Mason voice just doesn't sound right. I might be able to get used to it, but every now and then I hear a touch of a southern (Texas, maybe?) drawl in some of the words. It's a little off-putting.

Even worse, however, is Della Street's voice; her voice is described as well-modulated, and in this narration, she sounds a bit strident - or perhaps whining. I don't care for this at all and I could not get used to it.

When not doing a voice, the narration is just fine, and the voice for Sara Ansel couldn't be better.

As noted above, I really like this story. It's a bit different than many of the others.

Good Story, Less than good production quality

This is a collection of three short stories.

I think Michael Prichard is a good narrator, and I enjoy the stories.

What led to the decrease in the overall score is the poor production values... it looks like they took Mr Prichard's recording and then chopped it up into evenly-sized "chapters"... At the MINIMUM, a new chapter should be started when a new story starts, but that isn't the case here. In addition, if one is going to make chapter breaks within a short story, they should be at appropriate places.

If one is just going to listen to the audio stream, the poor chapter breakup should not diminish the enjoyment.

An epochal story

This is an early story, but it is a key one in the Nero Wolfe / Archie Goodwin stories: it is the story in which Archie first meets Lucy Rowan.

Archie and Nero Wolfe are on the way to an exhibition when their car has a blowout, and they are stranded out in farm county; they cut across a field to the farmhouse and were menaced by a bull. Later that night, the body of a young man is found in that field, dead, with the bull pushing at him.

So, it's not the usual Nero Wolfe story that takes place with him at his home; he is out and about. There are elements of fun in the story as well.

The reading is pretty good; the worst part of this recording is that it is not broken into chapters; they just cut off each "chapter" at around 42 minutes. I have much more respect for the audio books that are properly broken up by chapter. If that doesn't bother you, this audio book is worth owning.

It was fun to listen to the reading, but I was not aware that this was a highly abridged version of the story. I used to own this, but it's gone missing (I may have lent it to someone who never returned it). However, there were parts that I remembered that seemed to be missing from the story. (I have since found and re-read this tale, and it is indeed pretty abridged).

George Takei and Leonard Nimoy did a good job narrating, but the book has been substantially trimmed.

I would have preferred to get my money back on this one.

I enjoy this story, and I have to give credit to Anna Massey for making M Poirot sound better than most that I have heard. Most people doing M Poirot's voice sound like people "doing" a French accent... but he truly sounds foreign in this reading.

I enjoyed listening to the story, and glad to have it in my collection.

This was the first Rex Stout audio book I've listened to. I'm not sure about Michael Prichard's reading; I'm about 3/4 of the way through this book, and I think his performance is growing on me.

I have read nearly all of the Nero Wolfe books, but this was my first foray into his audible books.

As others have noted, as good as the mysteries are, the real treat of the Nero Wolfe stories is the relationship between Archie and Nero, and this book is a pretty good showpiece for the relationship.

Ian Carmichael is Lord Peter Wimsey for me, so it was a pleasure to hear him read this story.

I've always enjoyed this story very much: an old lady (Agatha Dawson), slowly dying, died unexpectedly. From all accounts it seems to be murder, but there is no reason for anyone to murder her: she was wealthy, but she was on good terms with her only living relative (Mary Whittaker, a trained nurse who was helping to care for her). The old lady didn't make a will, but as the money was coming to Mary anyway, she trusted Mary to do right by the servants, etc. Not only is there no motive, even assuming Mary tried to murder Miss Dawson, no one can figure out how. Nevertheless, it looks like Mary murdered her older relative -- but why? and how? The book consists of our heroes searching for a motive, and then trying to figure out how the murder may have been committed.

Miss Climpson has a significant role in this book; I think she brightens up the stories she is in (much like any story with Peter's mother).

The usual others are in this story (meaning Charles Parker and Bunter).
