Historia
Harriet Jacobs’ autobiography, written under the pseudonym Linda Brent, details her experiences as a slave in North Carolina, her escape to freedom in the north, and her ensuing struggles to free her children. The narrative was partly serialized in the New York Tribune, but was discontinued because Jacobs’ depictions of the sexual abuse of female slaves were considered too shocking. It was published in book form in 1861.

Insight
Revisado: 01-12-24
There is clear description of the cruelty and horror given to enslaved people by white people.
Very unfortunately the reader is very hard to take in. Just rough and rotely read, no cadence, no match of content to feeling of the voice. Rote.

The narrator’s voice is very nice on the ears. Felix stands out as the most honest, smart and interesting character. Beautifully written sexual “scenes”.

Historia
Ian Frazier trains his eye for unforgettable detail on Siberia, that vast expanse of Asiatic Russia. He explores many aspects of this storied, often grim region. He writes about the geography, the resources, the native peoples, the history, the 40-below midwinter afternoons, the bugs. The book brims with Mongols, half-crazed Orthodox archpriests, fur seekers, ambassadors of the czar bound for Peking, tea caravans, German scientists, American prospectors, intrepid English nurses, and prisoners and exiles of every kind....

Revisado: 11-19-21
The author’s voice is easy to listen to and you will learn a lot and laugh a little bit. This book spurred me on toward learning a lot more about Siberia. YouTube tours of Siberian towns and cities are a lot of fun to see.

Delightful
Revisado: 01-26-21
The characters are so good natured and kind. The speech is beautiful and nice to the ear. The sound effects (typewriters, cooking, car engines) and the singing at the open and close of each chapter are enjoyable. There is humor and humanity. Just loved it as escape to a gentler way of being than in US in 2021.

Narrator very distracting
Revisado: 02-25-20
Story almost ruined by oddness of this narrator’s breathy end-of-sentence words.
It is very annoying and I am not sure I will be able to tolerate it past Chapter 18.

Harsh
Revisado: 09-14-19
Both the story and the narrator’s voice are very harsh, hard to slog through this one.
I read this because I was curious, my son had been required to read it in high school! (what torture).
CliffNotes, online and free, offers excellent list all the characters so you can see the spellings which is helpful. Also the list gives info about each character-big help.
