Historia
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women.

Couldn’t get passed the reader
Revisado: 03-12-24
I didn’t listen to the story as the reader is annoying, with a voice too breathy and dramatic - unnecessary on EVERY SINGLE sentence

Repetitive and a little tiresome
Revisado: 03-12-24
The story was interesting enough, but the author doesn’t trust her readers to remember what she already explained two pages ago, so it is tiresomely repetitive and a tad condescending.

Pretty Good Story - not so great narrator
Revisado: 10-20-23
The story is pretty good, held my interest, but the narrator - though her English accent is pretty good, had some really poor pronunciation. If that doesn't bother you, then give it a listen.

Years ago, the Gypsy Kumpania where Janeal Mikkado lived was attacked by outsiders. But the past is quickly coming back to haunt her. Both the best friend and the boyfriend that she was sure were dead have reappeared in her life, as has someone who knows about the money. There's a debt to be paid for the money she found, but there's an even greater debt she must face.

The story is a good one, with an interesting twist. The narration was good, and I recommend the book to those who enjoy Ted Dekkers other books.

This is a dangerous tale of times past... a love story full of deep seduction. A story of terrible longing and bold sacrifice. Then as now, evil begins its courtship cloaked in light. And the heart embraces what it should flee, forgetting it once had a truer lover. With a kiss, evil will ravage body, soul, and mind. Yet there remains hope, because the heart knows no bounds.

terrible narration
Revisado: 11-21-22
This is the first Ted Dekker book I've come across that I can't listen to. It has a lot to do with the narrator who I just could not listen to. There are narrators who do not get in the way of the story they are reading, but actually carry the story along nicely. This reader really gets in the way, and got on my nerves. I didn't get far into the story, but it seems to be about vampires? The characters did not really interest me, and the story did not capture my attention like his others have.

Beautiful story - needs a more complete ending
Revisado: 11-05-22
I love this story, but I feel it needed one more chapter from Epiphanies perspective. Too many loose ends - we are interested in both stories, but it leaves too much unsaid, in my opinion. That being said, I still recommend the book.

Historia
Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 08-07-22
I never can understand why an American would narrate a book set in England/Scotland. The only way her reading is even tolerable is if you listen to it sped up, but her mispronunciations of so many words, her terrible attempt at English and Scottish accents, and the slowness of her reading have made it so I cannot finish this book.

Historia
Becky rocks a baby that rocked her world. Sixty years earlier, with her fiancé, Drew, in the middle of the Korean Conflict, Ivy throws herself into her work at a nursing home to keep her sanity and provide for the child Drew doesn't know is coming. Ivy cares for Anna, an elderly patient who taxes Ivy's listening ear until the day she suspects Anna's tall tales are not the ramblings of dementia. They're fragments of Anna's disjointed memories of a remarkable life.

Interesting, but not quite great
Revisado: 04-29-21
I found the story compelling, and over-all the reader does a great job, except for certain common words that she doesn’t seem to know how to pronounce, which was annoying. I feel that the book lets us down at the end, as the three stories are not woven together very well. Becky, the modern woman, already saves morning glory seeds for some unknown reason. The only way the stories are tied together is that they move in next door to Ivy at the end. A couple more sentences at the end, just tying her saving of seeds to theirs somehow, could have made it a sweeter story with a better ending. I would recommend the book, but just wanted to add my gripes.

A Great, compelling Story
Revisado: 01-09-21
Another wonderful book by Lisa Wingate. The narrator was pretty good, but several of the bounces she did were just too quiet to be understood. Whenever she was talking for old people she was doing a growl/whisper that was very hard to make out. Other than that, a wonderful book
