Really powerful storytelling, shockingly objective

I’m contemplated after enjoying this audiobook. It makes me reflect on all of our potential and what we can truly achieve if we stop worrying about what people think. Steve contributed so much to humanity, and this book is really incredible.

Historia
The year 1996 was the one that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at 16 to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind...until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about the wind-swept beach town - and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define the rest of her life. By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer.

Very powerful and engrossing story. Top notch.
Revisado: 09-23-24
The story is great, captivating, and really powerful. It’s a Sparks novel through and through. The story is really special and crafted beautifully. The ending was the promised tear-jerker and was fitting and satisfying.
My only complaint and it’s minor - the narrator has this annoying laugh-speak tendency and it took me several chapters to get over it. Like - instead of saying “once” it’s “h-once” - it comes across as annoying and if occasional, fine. But it was a frequent.
Beyond that, truly an incredible book. If you read this review before you listen to the book, don’t let it deter you. Just a heads up if things like this annoy you. Just try to ignore it get past it. The story IS worth it. ❤️

Good story, slow burn, and like most of her other books, the plot twist at the end kept me guessing. I really liked it.

In your hands, you hold the secret to transforming your life. Big words? Yes, but this is a plan that has already proven itself with millions of people around the world. In a Sunday-morning sermon, Will told his congregation he wanted to make the world a complaint-free zone and, to prove he was serious, he passed out purple bracelets to each church member and offered them a challenge. "If you catch yourself complaining, take the bracelet and move it to the other wrist."

This is NOT your typical weight loss book. Weight loss books have historically been rife with misinformation. A conveyor belt of diet books pretending to have the latest revolutionary weight loss "hacks", trying to grab your attention with whatever weight loss diet is trending.

I loved the in-depth research studies cited throughout the book, and I appreciated the authors intention to provide education so people might make their own best decisions about what to pursue. It’s so easy to get caught up in the latest, and this book does a great job of helping to prevent that. Or cure you of it.

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Meh. There’s better books.
Revisado: 09-28-23
I really wanted to like this. I kept waiting for it to get good, but it never did. It was just relentlessly strange with a meandering plot that was very difficult to really sink your teeth into. I got the metaphor, and the allegories. Orwell and Rand did it better. Much.
I listened to the entire book, and the narration was just OK. The story was also just OK. Glad I put it on 1.5 speed.

I had low expectations, figuring it was another self help book. But the way it’s written is really awesome! The author did all the voices and he did his best, but it was a little distracting at times. Maybe just me. Loved it tho. Will listen again.

Historia
American women visit more doctors, have more surgery, and fill more prescriptions than men. In Everything Below the Waist, Jennifer Block asks: Why is the life expectancy of women today declining relative to women in other high-income countries, and even relative to the generation before them? Block tells the stories of patients, clinicians, and reformers, uncovering history and science that could revolutionize the standard of care, and change the way women think about their health.

Educational, left-leaning, and very useful for all
Revisado: 04-10-23
I found this book to be very educational, and, despite some leftist arguments (that I really don’t agree with fundamentally), I thought the book was unbiased for the most part.
I found it to be really eye-opening and helpful to explain some of the things that I have experienced in my life. Some of the information I was presented with, broke my heart because it made me realize how badly I was treated when I was younger. This is a book that I think all women, regardless of political persuasion, should read.
Too often we blindly accept what we were told about our bodies by doctors, who, turns out, don’t know nearly as much as they should. I wish I had this book 25 years ago.

Revisado: 03-18-23
I learned quite a bit from this book, and it had a very promising beginning. I was really captivated and then I got bored. I don’t feel as though the author did a great job arriving at the expectation the book seemed to set. Still worth a listen, for sure tho.

A great recap of the governors victories
Revisado: 03-14-23
DeSantis himself did not narrate the entire book, and this turned out to be a good thing. I don’t think it’s his forte. That said, the substance of the book, and the introduction read by him was very good. I learned some new things about the governor, and widely regarded most of the content as a recap of some of his great accomplishments. I think it’s pretty evident that he’s going to run for president, and this book stands as proof. As a huge fan of DeSantis, and the free state of Florida, it was nice to recap some of the highlights of his performance as governor. It’s worth a listen. I would definitely recommend it.
