When 15-year-old Marigold becomes pregnant amid the Great Depression, she is rejected by her family and forced to fend for herself. And when she loses her baby in the forest, her whole world turns upside down. She’s even more distraught upon discovering she has an inexplicable power that makes her both beautiful and terrifying - and something of a local legend. Meanwhile, migrant workers Vern and Paul discover a violet-eyed baby and take it upon themselves to care for her.

Historia
Folks in Moab live for ice cream socials, baseball, and the local paper’s weekly gossip column. Sheriff Winston Browne has watched over Moab with a generous eye for a decade, and by now he’s used to handling the daily dramas that keep life interesting for Moab’s quirky residents. But just after Winston receives some terrible, life-altering news, a seemingly mute runaway with no clear origin arrives in Moab. The residents do what they believe is right and take her in - until two suspicious strangers arrive and begin looking for her.

Great characters, wonderfully human while also reflecting humanity at its the best, the story, to me, illustrates the basis for ties that bind in communities of people with common history.

Historia
In this vast and gorgeous tapestry of a novel, serf and master, Cossack and tsar, priest and Jew are brought together in a family saga which unrolls through centuries of history to reveal that most impenetrable and mysterious of lands - Russia. Through the life of a little town east of Moscow in the Russian heartland, Edward Rutherfurd creates a sweeping family saga from the baffling contradictions of Russia's culture and her peoples - bleak yet exotic, brutal but romantic, land of ritual yet riddled with superstitious fears.

Historia
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Good Factual Rendition, Biased Perspective
Revisado: 10-29-23
This trilogy provides a well organized and accurate overview of the material facts comprising the history of the covered periods. Follett is also an excellent storyteller and deftly frames his stories within his chosen framework of interrelated families. The only weakness (in my view) is his obvious bias in favor of all things liberal/Democratic and against all things conservative/Republican. But a great reason nonetheless.

Great story and narrator
Revisado: 01-09-22
Love, love, love Moriarty’s stories and ability to see life from every perspective - and cannot imagine any narrator other than Ms. Lee! As a working mother and grandmother of highly competitive siblings - nearing 70 myself - many aspects of the Joy character resonated, sometimes uncomfortably so, I could barely stop listening and laughing my way through this wonderful book.

Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

The Power of Education
Revisado: 08-15-19
I expect this book is most compelling for those of us who, like Ms. Westover, grew up poor, in strict religious families, with highly “traditional” values - the singular difference, for most of us, having been the exposure to the outside world through books, which offer contrasting views and thereby illuminate paths to another kind of life. A powerful reminder of the power of the written word and how important it is to preserve our collective and individual freedom to read - something we should all be mindful of as we watch protests in Hong Kong, Moscow and other places where is this freedom is restricted by the state.

Historia
Justice Anthony Kennedy slipped out of the Supreme Court building on June 27, 2018, and traveled incognito to the White House to inform President Donald Trump that he was retiring, setting in motion a political process that his successor, Brett Kavanaugh, would denounce three months later as a "national disgrace" and a "circus". Justice on Trial, the definitive insider's account of Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court, is based on extraordinary access to more than 100 key figures - including the president, justices, and senators - in that ferocious political drama.

Compelling, forceful, factual, terrifying
Revisado: 07-17-19
Having lived vicariously through the confirmation processes for both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh (as a lawyer and parent of a key participants), I was shocked and aggrieved but thought I was “over it” - however, listening to this account by the redoubtable Mesdames Hemingway and Severino, I found myself drawn back into the saga as though it were still happening, my stomach in knots and my emotions running high. I am sure Democrats and the MSM will label this as a partisan tome - but those of us who were “there” know better and I can honestly say it changed me forever. Like Justice Kavanaugh, I choose to live on the “sunny side” and just hope he and his family can move past this, knowing that many (I like to think most) of us understand what a grave injustice was done here, one that can only be rectified by a long and (what we know will be an) illustrious tenure on SCOTUS. In the meantime, grateful for this accurate and unflinching telling of the story, which provides an opportunity for others to understand and appreciate why judicial appointments are so consequential.

Historia
Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

Brilliant plot and character development
Revisado: 05-03-19
Well written, tight and crisp, but with just the right amount of detail to make you feel as though you know the characters - at one moment, weeping in empathy and the next, laughing with (never at) them - while also never being predictable. Also love that it perfectly illustrates the benefits and potential pitfalls of mindful living and a focus on wellness.
