Historia
While reading psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison's groundbreaking account of bipolar disorder, An Unquiet Mind, Sarah Wilson discovered an ancient Chinese proverb that would change her life: To conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful. Wilson, a best-selling author, journalist, and entrepreneur, had spent years struggling with her own beast: Chronic anxiety. And the words of this proverb would become the key to understanding her condition.

Well written, engaging, page turner
Revisado: 12-25-24
The story was engaging. I really liked the writer’s philosophical and poetic voice (at points). Would be 5 stars except the last several chapters were a bit cookie cutter, a little too fantastical. The characters never dealt with the psychological and emotional fall out of the climax scene, which just left me feeling flat, like “oh right, these are two dimensional characters in a book” - I would have liked if they were three.
But still overall a good listen, listened over 3 days while doing a household project and never lost interest.

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

Inspiring, affirming, wise
Revisado: 10-28-24
I love this book perhaps more than her previous two. Her voice continues to strengthen. Every women approaching or in perimenopause or menopause should read it. Weaving personal narrative, social and cultural considerations, and myth and story.
Appreciated her discussion of what elderhood w/o children (who to be an elder without being a grandmother) might look like.
I was particularly appreciative of how she addressed the trans issue, affirming BOTH trans people rights AND affirming the lived experience of being a biological women. She brilliantly demonstrates how to call IN rather than call out.

A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Did Not Age Well
Revisado: 07-28-24
I tried to hang in there based on reviews that it gets good later on (2/3 of the way through!?) I slogged my way through the first five chapters, but just couldn’t. The story is boring, the characters uninteresting, the gender thing that was maybe shock-intriguing in 1969 is neither. I finally couldn’t take anymore when I got to the “Zannies” - fortune tellers that were described as “insane”, “schizophrenic” and “psychopaths” within the span of a few sentences. A true classic can stand the test of time, this fails miserably. But the worst part was the narrator, who has a weird accent, and mis-pronounces “th”, ie pronounces “teeth” as “teef”. And somehow manages to be overly dramatic while also being monotone.

Well researched and written - poor narration
Revisado: 05-27-24
The narrator was horrible, especially when she was reading quotes of men, she would drop her voice several octaves and take on this cartoonish bro voice. So cringe, made it almost unlistenable. Also about as far off from Keyes actual voice as possible, he actually has a pretty nasal voice and speaks pretty calmly, she voiced him so inaccurately, would have been a lot better to not even try to change her voice for men’s dialogue.
There are hours of interrogation interviews with Keyes on YouTube, you would think the narrator would spend 2 minutes to Google the source material.

Sarah Turney is a prominent voice in true crime. She runs her own podcast, Voices for Justice. She previously was interviewed in journalist Ottavia Zappala's podcast Missing Alissa. That's because Turney's sister Alissa vanished years ago, and her father Michael was arrested in the case in 2020.Recently, Turney has taken to social media and Voices for Justice to blast Ottavia and Missing Alissa. She's made all sorts of wild claims, including implying that Ottavia tried to sue her for speaking out about Alissa. We were curious and dug into Turney's claims. We found that they're untrue. Solid journalism
Revisado: 06-27-23
This episode was thoughtful and thorough. It can be exhausting to stand up to toxic bullies, it seems only certain types of personalities (dark triad / cluster B) have the stamina for the kind of ongoing campaign to destroy other people, people without this personality trait are quickly run down and demoralized.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-18-23
I loved Ireland, so my expectations were high. Pretty much the first half is completely pointless to the story, it’s just a list of people the main character stays with. The plot picks up more than eight hours in, when the plot lines converge it’s rather underwhelming. The last 5 minutes is pure gold, but not worth the time it took to get there.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 01-03-23
I couldn’t even get past the first 30 minutes because the narrator was awful. Harsh, over accentuated, and did these overly dramatic voices for dialogue. The male voices in particular where just so distracting. If narration is important then skip.

Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, was deeply opposed to Beren, and imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. Undaunted by Lord Thingol’s challenge, Beren and Lúthien embark on the supremely heroic attempt to rob Morgoth, the greatest of all evil beings, of a Silmaril, one of the hallowed jewels that adorn the Black Enemy’s crown.

Dissapointing
Revisado: 12-18-22
This is the second book I've listened to by Christopher Tolkien, I attempted the Fall of Gondolin but was unable to get through it. The writing is terrible. For some reason he attempts to write in old English, with lots of thous, thine, wherefores, run on sentences, too many propositional phrases for a story, and weird repitions like using "indeed" multiple times in a single sentence. Sentences "what knowest thou thine". It makes it hard to follow, especially with so many unfamiliar place and character names. I've read everything by JRRT and it isn't consistent with his writing so I don't understand why CT would write in such an archain style. It really ruins it. The actual story of Bergen and Luthian is only about an hour, the rest is filler, random notes, etc

I struggled with this podcast at first, but as I’ve followed along these last few months I’ve grown to appreciate the non-sensationalized, thoughtful and respectful coverage of this case. I prefer listening on audible over other podcast apps because I can listen at 1.1x speed, as I feel they speak very slowly.
