Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Eye Opening
Revisado: 03-31-25
Prior to listening to this book, I was largely ignorant of the history of Babylon. I found this to be a very easy listen. It was informative without being stuffy. It serves as a cautionary tale on the rise and (imminent) decline of the West—the common indicators are all there. Derek Perkins did a great job with the narration. I would recommend this book.

Historia
In her international bestseller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte's Web, high up in Zuckerman's barn. Charlotte's spider web tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur's life when he was born the runt of his litter. E. B. White's Newbery Honor Book is a tender novel of friendship, love, life, and death that will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.

Fantastic Performance
Revisado: 06-24-24
I loved reading Charlotte’s Web when I was a child and watching the animated movie with Debbie Reynolds voicing the titular character, but it had been a long time since I heard the tale. When I saw that Meryl Streep was the narrator, I had to get it. Fantastic performance by her and the ensemble cast. I highly recommend.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Wow. Just, Wow
Revisado: 05-08-24
I knew general details about General Grant, about his Civil War experience and that he became president. But modern history teachers do him a grave disservice. Ron Chernow, God bless you for this thorough account of the man, the myth, and the legend (and these appellations are not extreme). I was FLOORED by the work that he did during Reconstruction, how “modern” and stalwart his positions were, how he stood immovable in the face of death threats and perils to oversee the passage and implementation of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments! After reading this book, Grant catapulted in my estimation to my favorite president. Excellent read. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Historia
As The Last Full Measure opens, Gettysburg is past and the war advances to its third brutal year. On the Union side, the gulf between the politicians in Washington and the generals in the field yawns ever wider. Never has the cumbersome Union Army so desperately needed a decisive, hard-nosed leader. It is at this critical moment that Lincoln places Ulysses S. Grant in command - and turns the tide of war.

Compelling Conclusion
Revisado: 04-11-24
I really enjoyed Jeff Shaara’s final installment of the “Civil War” trilogy written by him and his father. I enjoyed getting into the kind of Robert E. Lee, his confusion as to why the tide of war turned, yet never concluding his stance was ill-selected from the beginning. I LOVED President Lincoln’s initial comments to Ulysses Grant. Those comments are STILL poignant today. Out r constitution and our union is STILL worth defending and no one has the right to dissolve it. Bravo, Mr. Shaara.

Historia
Introverts have gifts for the church and the world. But many churches tend to be extroverted places where introverts are marginalized. Some Christians end up feeling like it's not as faithful to be an introvert. Adam McHugh shows how introverts can live and minister in ways consistent with their personalities. He explains how introverts and extroverts process information and approach relationships differently and how introverts can practice Christian spirituality in ways that fit who they are.

This book touched a deep place in my soul and made me cry. It exposed the longing in my heart to draw near to God, even when I frenetically stay away from Him through action and self-soothing activities. This is one that I will definitely listen to again.

A Solid Work
Revisado: 03-22-24
I read/listened to Killer Angels first and when I learned of this book, I was curious to see if it had the same heft as Michael’s work. His son, Jeff, can hold his head high. It was powerful exploration of the events leading up to and through the war up to Chancellorville. It was also eerie reading it in light of a post-January 6th America; the parallels are chilling…and bears close monitoring. Highly recommended this book. The narrator brought it to life as well.

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

So Moving
Revisado: 03-03-24
I did not expect to be so moved by this book. It was phenomenal. I was there. I felt the fog of war. I mourned over the impotence felt by all involved on both sides. I raged over the pride, the mishandling of men’s souls. I did not expect to cry (Armistead’s chapter and in other sections), but I did.
The voice actor was FANTASTIC!! His accents and the pain injected into the tale—chef’s kiss. Highly, highly recommend
