Historia
Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians.

Great everything and a ton of content
Revisado: 11-01-21
the audio performance was perfect and enchanting. the story was as great as all of Cassandra's work. and it was a long book, so, a lot to love. frustrating dramatic irony and a complex mystery propel the plot.

Historia
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

too much don't buy audiobook
Revisado: 07-23-21
Struggled to finish... from only about half way through. When I watched Cloud Atlas, I felt the same way as I do now about this book. there is such a thing as trying too hard. Everything is a symbol, every human is a metaphor, all of the stereotypical plot points of trying to break reincarnation. All of them. unfortunately, one of the best interludes didn't occur until the "end," and at that point I was so sick of having the main story line interrupted that I barely enjoyed the interludes.
The author is trying so hard to seem "deep" and "mystical," but really they're just throwing together words that sound pretty but are decidedly vague. And half of the main story line is told with toneless, repetitive simple-sentence structure. The annoying rhythm of that style is exacerbated by a narrator with a matter-of-fact, plodding voice.
The one thing the author does exceptionally well is description. all five senses engaged and tons of details. But that honestly just couples with everything else to make a meaninglessly long, slow read. They're trying to develop the theme that video games and books are the same and while I agree that stories in any format share many similarities, there's a reason why they're different, too. It's much harder to figure out what is important when every detail is overemphasized in a book. This was an especially bad book for me to listen to because you only get the audio input to help you keep track of the overabundance of story lines. At least, if this were a game, I'd have audio, visual, and tactile... and it would be easier to "look back" and reminds myself of the story arch.
Anyway, final word: only useful as background noise. Author should have split the multiple stories into their own books.
