Historia
The number of books in the Bible depends on which Bible is being referenced. Protestant and Catholic churches recognize 27 New Testament books. Protestants recognize 39 books of the Jewish canon in the Old Testament. Roman Catholics hold 46 books of the Old Testament as canon, along with expanded versions of Esther and Daniel.

Fine collection ruined by terrible narration
Revisado: 06-24-24
The main complaint here is the narration. Jarring pauses as the narrator struggles to muddle through names of people and places are distracting and the narrator sounds like he has major sinus issues. I’d return this if I could.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

A bunch of nonsense
Revisado: 01-31-22
If you're into bullshit stream-of-consciousness pseudo-poetry and admittedly false stories that don't have a point, this might be for you. Hated every minute of trying to listen to this, and finally stopped when I found numerous negative reviews from actual Vietnam vets. If it doesn't reflect their experience as it claims to, it's not worth listening to.

The first major bioterror event in the United States - the anthrax attacks in October 2001 - was a clarion call for scientists who work with "hot" agents to find ways of protecting civilian populations against biological weapons. In The Demon in the Freezer, his first nonfiction book since The Hot Zone, a number-one New York Times best seller, Richard Preston takes us into the heart of USAMRIID, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Not as good as The Hot Zone
Revisado: 01-28-22
Beginning went well, but I struggled through the second half. Also a lot of recycled material from The Hot Zone.

This book's reputation speaks for itself, so I'll just review the narration. THIS is the version of the Silmarillion you want. Martin Shaw has the perfect voice for these stories, just like Robert Inglis is the perfect voice for LoTR.

In this gritty New York Times best-seller, the true story of a crooked deal between the FBI and the Irish Mob is exposed. By providing a penetrating look into the mean streets of mid-1970s South Boston, the author shows how two kids from the neighborhood cross paths again years later, ending in the biggest informant scandal in FBI history.

This wasn't exactly a page-turner for me. It seemed disjointed, and I had a sense of "okay, when does this pick up??" It picked up in the last hour, with details revealed after the fact.

Historia
Herman Melville’s tale of corporate discontent, Bartleby, the Scrivener, tells the story of a quiet, hardworking legal copyist who works in an office in the Wall Street area of New York City. The business where he works handles the official financial paperwork of wealthy men. One day, Bartleby’s employer requests he proofread one of the documents he has copied. Bartleby declines the assignment with the inscrutable “I would prefer not,” the first of what will become many refusals.

The narrator is perfect for this story. He really does a great job of conveying both the seriousness of the characters and the absurdity of the way they act.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Doubleplusgood narration.
Revisado: 01-12-21
Every year, it seems as if 1984 becomes more timely. With dictionaries changing politically inconvenient definitions and postmodernist skeptics apparently running the show, the world of today looks more and more like 1984 Oceania. 1984 is a veiled reference to a past sanity where 2 and 2 always made four... erm, Oldthink.
The book itself obviously doesn't need my review, so let me just day that the narration is excellent. Narration can make or break an audio book, and the narrator here does a wonderful job of creating the right atmosphere, conveying emotion, and keeping the listener hooked. Great work.

Historia
Throughout history, leaders have used solitude as a matter of course. Eisenhower wrote memoranda to himself during World War II as a way to think through complex problems. Martin Luther King found moral courage while sitting alone at his kitchen table one night during the Montgomery bus boycott. Jane Goodall used her intuition in the jungles of Central Africa while learning how to approach chimps. Solitude is a state of mind, a space where you can focus on your own thoughts without distraction....

"Whiskey is not the answer"
Revisado: 09-04-20
I had the privilege of taking a class with Judge Kethledge in law school. He was one of the most effective leaders in a classroom I've come across.
The collection of stories about leaders using solitude is enlightening and entertaining. My personal favorite was Grant in the Vicksburg campaign--"whiskey is not the answer." As a history major and continuing history enthusiast (and lover of good bourbon), this was awesome. As part of the campaign by Confederate apologists and lost-causers, Grant is frequently maligned as a drunkard and a butcher. Here, he is a humble leader dedicated to his work. Outstanding stuff.
