Historia
From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

Insider view of the Hollywood film industry; A mini-MBA lesson in corporate thinking

I loved the intimate atmosphere created by all these personal quotes. I love the insights into all parts of the film making process and the business. The overview of the different “phases” of film industry is great value to understand other industries going through changes.

Read with little acting depth

There is little drama, suspense, or even emotions in this narration. That is a shame. I find myself wondering if it was not created by a machine, which given the storyline would make total sense.

In Practical Fairy Tales for Everyday Living, fanciful characters that one can identify with battle personal problems, mishaps, and mayhem. None of them are guaranteed a happily-ever-after, but by applying the fundamentals of general semantics - a communication-based self-help system - they are better able to evaluate and understand everyday conundrums to successfully vanquish challenging situations.

Hits the sweet spot
Revisado: 10-11-22
Some of us like to ‘make things explainable’. Yet in real, in for example social settings, that is an impossible task. The next best thing is to do it in fairy tales! This book does that: it take multiple, sometimes difficult, real life scenarios, and explains them. It is not real, but it is not far from being real, and that makes this book useful to the readers.

Nine years of tranquility came to an abrupt end when a Méridien starship entered the Hellébore system, sounding a dire warning for Alex Racine, the Haraken president. Unwanted visitors had arrived again. But this time, they're not alien; they're human. Claiming to have followed the course of a colony ship launched a millennium ago when Earth wrestled with resource wars and climate change, the mission commander, Antonio García, requests a meeting with the planet's leaders.

Story tempo is great: just enough, not too much details. Would have wanted more plot twists. Also, a bit too ‘treky’ for my taste.

Not a biography
Revisado: 07-02-22
I enjoyed this historical story telling of subjects that Von Neumann delved into. I also enjoyed the 10% of the story about Von Neumann. However, too much is too much, and telling me the whole history of cellular automata just because Von Neumann spent a year on it is too much. Otherwise an enjoyable content, just not a biography.

Worth the listening
Revisado: 06-12-22
A bit long, however these insights make it a valuable book:
1) that it took for ever to understand how to affect the markets, and yet still be able to measure “unaffected“ signals
2) that Simon used white icing of a cake as an ashtray
3) the book talk about ML in politics, something that is very real but little talked about

Reality of ww2 where many die, prose a bit weak

Good historical content. People dropping all over. At some point you realize that mostly only those that have told their story survive. Prose drags a bit and is a bit repetitive.

Roald Dahl penned his first letter to his mother, Sofie Magdalene, when he was just nine years old. The origins of a brilliantly funny, subversive, creative mind were evident in boarding school, and as he entered adulthood, his penchant for storytelling emerged in his missives home from Africa, where he was stationed by Shell Oil, and then the desert camps of the Royal Air Force.

Much pleasure to hear the man’s talent: it is sometimes hard to believe these are real letters because they are so entertaining. Also we learn of many experiences that appear in his later writings.

Perhaps the greatest physicist of the second half of the 20th century, Richard Feynman changed the way we think about quantum mechanics, the most perplexing of all physical theories. Here Lawrence M. Krauss, himself a theoretical physicist and best-selling author, offers a unique scientific biography: a rollicking narrative coupled with clear and novel expositions of science at the limits.

Good tempo and smooth intro to physics introduced
Revisado: 01-27-21
Narrative moves along well and captures well the deeper person. A bit of a slowdown towards the end but this reflects the “dithering “ of Feynman. However the last two chapters then pulls it all back together to finish with a bang! I found the physics well introduced, and that good insights were provided into the other important people.
