Historia
Margot and Mama have lived by the forest ever since Margot can remember. When Margot is not at school, they spend quiet days together in their cottage, waiting for strangers to knock on their door. Strays, Mama calls them. People who have strayed too far from the road. Mama loves the strays. She feeds them wine, keeps them warm. Then she satisfies her burning appetite by picking apart their bodies. But Mama’s want is stronger than her hunger sometimes.

Extraordinarily well-written and narrated
Revisado: 02-22-25
This is not so much of a horror story--though there's plenty of gore--as it is a coming-of-age story of a young girl who is trying to make sense of the world around her. The narrator is pitch-perfect, exuding this matter-of-fact, naive tone while describing horrendous acts through the eyes of the girl called Little One. As the story unfolds and Little One discovers who she is and what she believes in, she also has to face hard truths about her mother.

Historia
Iðunn is in yet another doctor's office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something's not right, but practitioners dismiss her symptoms and blood tests haven't revealed any cause. When she talks to friends and family about it, the refrain is the same—have you tried eating better? exercising more? establishing a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice, buying everything from vitamins to sleeping pills to a step-counting watch. Nothing helps. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on, and wakes up to find she’s walked over 40,000 steps in the night.

… even after the end, which failed to make horror/fantasy genre sense. Decent writing, good narration, and a unique story but the author just didn’t manage to pull it all together in the end.

Started off strong ...
Revisado: 12-31-24
... but then became repetitive and drawn-out. This story could of been gripping and compelling if it had been told in half the time. The author, unfortunately, crossed this line--at least for me--of sounding like she was whining bc the last half of the book was seemingly an attempt to say the same thing (how much she hurt) using different words. For me, that dissipated and even normalized the brutality of the crime against her mother and the devastating effects on her life. I was not thrilled with the narrator's voice, but it wasn't bad enough to stop me from listening.

Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

An intimate experience
Revisado: 12-08-24
"Sonny Boy" encapsulates what memoir is meant to be and redefines "narration" of an audiobook.
I adored how Al did not so much as read but told his stories, and in his telling, when something hit him as funny, he'd chuckle--which made it even more authentic and funny. As many folks have said, you feel like you're sitting at a corner table of a cafe with Al, as he's recounting his life with passion, humor, and an abiding curiosity.
At the end, you'll feel like you've had an encounter with him and have a solid sense of who he is, his values, and how he moves in life. "Sonny Boy" is really a gift to us all.
I'll miss having his gravelly, seasoned voice in my ear during my afternoon runs!

Historia
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

Historia
It is a hot summer in rural Ireland. A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. In the Kinsellas' house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new household—where everything is so well tended to—and this summer must soon come to an end.

Historia
With a wealth of never-before-accessed materials, Heather Clark brings to life the brilliant Sylvia Plath, who had precocious poetic ambition and was an accomplished published writer even before she became a star at Smith College. Refusing to read Plath’s work as if her every act was a harbinger of her tragic fate, Clark considers the sociopolitical context as she thoroughly explores Plath’s world.

Historia
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Great Companion to "Red Comet" by Heather Clark
Revisado: 08-16-22
I was more than halfway through "Red Comet's" 40 hours of audio and knew I had to listen to "The Bell Jar." Plath's writing and angst over female/male inequities hold up today. Don't rush through this if you enjoy great writing--I found myself pausing and just letting her words marinate. Plath's poetic mastery lends visceral descriptors of severe mental illness, suicidal ideation, as well as joy, hope, and infatuation. It's a tragedy that Plath went so soon for the lack of understanding of mental illness. I'm afraid not much has changed since.

Historia
When Notes on a Silencing hit bookstores in the summer of 2020, even amidst a global pandemic, it sent shockwaves through the country. Not only did this intimate investigative memoir usher in a media storm of coverage, but it also prompted the elite St. Paul's School to issue a formal apology to the author, Lacy Crawford, for its handling of her report of sexual assault by two fellow students nearly 30 years ago.

Not a Breezy Summer Read...
Revisado: 07-09-21
... but brilliantly and bravely written. I imagine Lacy paid a steep price for the retelling of an anguishing time in her life that she had come to terms with as much as one can in our broken justice system. Sexism, abuse, and sexual assault are socioeconomic-agnostic. Lacy acknowledges her privilege, which also serves as this beautiful background contrasted against the ugly underpinnings of what happened to her at such a tender age. Lacy found the words to feelings and philosophies, I have yet to sort out in my own life--and I'm 57! We were all trying to fulfill this one-dimensional concept of being a "good girl," an impossible human expectation that only exists in convents. This story is about what happens to a good girl, doing all the right things with trust and innocence intact falls into a trap that changes the trajectory of her life. And broken micro and macro systems that infuriate, but also the spark of hope from the few passionate people inside the system who are fighting every day for people like us. It may sound like a downer, but this is ultimately a story of triumph.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Eloquently Written and Read
Revisado: 09-07-20
This is not an anthropological review of "Hillybilly" culture, this is a coming of age story from a wickedly-bright and insightful young man whose open eyes and heart enabled him to thrive in the rest of the world while not turning his back on his family, his childhood, or his people.
Personally, this was a gift because it gave me compassionate insight into the ways in which people who are not like me think, live, and survive.
