Historia
Swann's Way is Marcel Proust's literary masterpiece and the first part of the multivolume audiobook Remembrance of Things Past. In the opening volume, the narrator travels back in time to recall his childhood and to introduce the listener to Charles Swann, a wealthy friend of the family and celebrity in the Parisian social scene. He again travels back, this time to the youth of Charles Swann in the French town of Combray, to tell the story of the love affair that took place before his own birth.

Totally committed performance
Revisado: 06-12-23
It took me a while to “tune in” to Meera’s voice. But as each new character was introduced and the range of emotions evoked by Dickens increased, the more I marvelled at the effort it must have taken on Ms Syal’s part to understand the text at such a deep level. And then convey that to us.
As for the story, I thought it was brilliant. I suspect the not-so-crypto-antisemitism has been responsible for the lack of screen adaptations. Or perhaps Dickens’ take on wealth doesn’t chime so well with some.
Anyway, thank you Meera Syal for your stunning reading of a truly great novel.

Exclusively from Audible. 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.' So begins Charles Dickens' most famous historical drama: a gripping tale of war, social injustice and the choice between darkness and light. After being unjustly imprisoned for 18 years, French doctor Manette is released from the Bastille jail in Paris and embarks upon a journey to London in the hope of finding the daughter he never met.

This is possibly my favourite audiobook ever. Thank you Simon Callow. Your interpretation of each character is peerless. You bring out every nuance in Dickens often satirical writing. If I’d read this book it would have been a struggle, I think. It’s taken many decades but at last I get Dickens.

Accompanied by Delirium (Kristen Schaal), he tracks down their estranged brother, Destruction (David Harewood), the only member of the Endless ever to abandon their post. Stories within stories within stories…
Revisado: 02-04-23
As I listened to the credits and heard the names of characters who had appeared in each story, I realised that the nesting of stories and snippets of stories within each other produces a Borgesian tapestry as rich as any other great piece of literature.
The comics remain my favourite version but I fear snobbery around that medium may prevent Gaiman being afforded his place in the Pantheon of great writers.
Having said that, Dirk Maggie and the rest of the production team deserve massive praise for their part in making such a wonderful adaptation.
The performances are all top-notch, not least Gaiman’s narration.
Finally: the music is outstanding. I heard Orpheus’ song and believed he’d composed it!

Historia
Master storyteller and satirist Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most in-demand commencement speakers of his time. For each occasion, Vonnegut’s words were unfailingly unique, insightful, and witty, and they stayed with audience members long after graduation. As edited by Dan Wakefield, this book reads like a narrative in the unique voice that made Vonnegut a hero to readers and listeners of all ages. At times hilarious, razor-sharp, freewheeling, and deeply serious, these reflections are ideal for anyone undergoing what Vonnegut would call their "long-delayed puberty ceremony".

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

It sometimes sounds like Faith Harper recorded this on a Dictaphone at the kitchen table. But once you get used to the sound, this is a great little book. The swearing is really just a way to hook people who might otherwise not be hooked. The research is sound, the advice invaluable. Well worth a listen.

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus - the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination - is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence.

Brilliant, abridged version
Revisado: 11-07-20
Turning comics into moving pictures is hard enough. Building a sonic universe must be more difficult in many ways. Maggs, Gaiman and their team pull it off magnificently.
Gaiman’s narration sets the scene perfectly. He knows the tone he wants and every scene has a perfect heft.
McAvoy’s Sandman sounds as though the voice I imagined from the books was sucked from my dreams by Morpheus himself.
My only quibble is that, by necessity, so much of the books had to be omitted. Perhaps there’ll be a ‘sequel’?
Anyway, this was my perfect introduction to Audible.
