Historia
All of us are faced countless times with the challenge of persuading others, whether we're trying to win a trivial argument with a friend or convince our coworkers about an important decision. Instead of relying on untrained instinct - and often failing as a result - we'd win more arguments if we learned the timeless art of verbal persuasion, or rhetoric.

This is a biography of Cicero, not "how to" book

Skilled blending of classic and modern thought
Revisado: 10-28-21
An effective introduction (or reintroduction for some) to Cicero’s life and works. James May’s translation is excellent, and he very effectively weaves interesting introductions throughout selected excerpts from Cicero’s works. This material starts with a brief biography of Cicero, and thereafter adds meaningful context to Cicero’s writings. A concise and fun way to experience some wisdom of the ancients. Narrated perfectly by Simon Vance.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Great story narrated perfectly
Revisado: 07-28-19
A simple love story that morphs into a sophisticated tale of multilayered relationships. Very dry humor throughout. The narration was pitch perfect and greatly enhanced the experience.

Historia
In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan put the environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl at the center of a rich history, told through characters he brought to indelible life. Now he performs the same alchemy with The Big Burn, the largest-ever forest fire in America, a tragedy that cemented Teddy Roosevelt's legacy.

Interesting story but repetitive and disorganized
Revisado: 06-04-10
This is a well researched story of the birth and early years of the National Forest Service, but it tends to be repetitive and disorganized, The story jumps around continuously, but the multiple narratives increase confusion without making the story more interesting. The description of the politics and the fire keeps your interest, but the book would have been better if it was shorter and more straightforward.

Demagoguery and repetition
Revisado: 01-16-10
Bradley presents a picture of 19th century Americans as racist imperialists. And nothing but racist imperialsts. While that description certainly has some truth, Bradley repeats the same charge over and over for such a long time that he loses credibility... and starts boring the listener to death. He does not try to conceal his disdain for the Anglo-Saxon Americans of the late 19th and early 20th century, characterising them as genocidal imperialists out to eradicate all other people from the earth with no redeeming qualities. This could have been an interesting tale, but the interminable and very biased preaching makes it very difficult take if you are a listener with a more balanced perspective. Even without the bias, the repetitive demagoguery just gets quite boring very quickly.
