In this far-reaching narrative, Weisman explains how our massive infrastructure would collapse and vanish without human presence; which everyday items may become immortalized as fossils; why some of our earliest buildings might be the last architecture left; and how plastic, bronze sculpture, and man-made molecules may be our lasting gifts to the universe.

important but gloomy
Revisado: 04-05-22
i thought this would be a book about the collapse of man made artifice after humans disappear. and I did get some of that, especially in the first part of the book where we are told how New York will fare after we're gone. but for the most part, this book was anout the myriad ways us humans are (often permanently) disfiguring our planet. I couldn't listen to the book for too long stretches of time. Sometimes I felt like I was punched in the gut after reading what we did to a species or an eco system. But I realise now that the book was better and more important for me this way. I wanted ruin porn (and I got some of that) but I also received understanding of the impact we have and how we can reduce it. An important book that I would recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in nature, ecosystems and or conservation. It was well read by the main voice actor. I do suppose I miss out on the pictures in the original book. still though; great read.

beautifully told historical story
Revisado: 03-06-22
absolutely amazing book that captures all the highs and lows of medieval fantasy but puts it in a framework of hitorically accurate old times. This book clearly shows you don't need magic or dragons to create an entertaining world and captivating story. the characters are all fleshed out very well. the story keeps you hooked until the very end and the world building is amazing. there were some audio problems with the recording but I suppose that can't be helped. the narrator is great, putting life in the characters through intonation and accents. absolutely splendid book

You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me. I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs - as much as any one person can.

important and eduring
Revisado: 12-27-21
while some of the information may feel a bit dated (I read this book in 2021 and it references online trends from 2012 onwards) the core message strikes even more true than it must have done in 2012. I would even argue that the unreality which Ryan worries about and laments has only grown stronger in the intervening years. I think more people should know about this book or its message in order to make better policies when it comes to news and journalism but also advertising and media in general. Like with many books of its kind it never addresses the fact that the underlying cause of the problem is just the inherent ways that capitalism works, but I don't suppose it would have added that much anyway. This book has made me reevaluate a couple of opinions which Ive held before and it made me understand more clearly some others. I would recommend this book to anyone who sometimes wonders and worries about the fact that we might be living in a post-truth world.

Historia
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

We're all lucky to still be here
Revisado: 12-06-21
a great listen, but probably better as a book. diagrams and pictures of the titan 2 missile silo would have really helped understanding while listening to the book. Still, this is a great, important and interesting work and after finishing it I get the feeling that we are rather lucky to still be alive and not be living in a nuclear wasteland. I think that is a very important message that more people should appreciate.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 10-01-21
i think this is Andy Weir's best book to date. and it is made even better by the casting of Ray Porter who absolutely nails the dialogue. The book is also enhanced as an audiobook because of the sound editing. Which will become obvious when you listen to the book. I think this book might be better as an audiobook than as a regular book. great read and recommended to everyone who loves science fiction.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Entertaining and well performed
Revisado: 09-09-21
A fun listen that was well performed. I had problems connecting to the main character due to her actions and the results they achieved. The main protagonist is cool and relatable, but it felt she was given plot leniency for her actions which made the story feel unrealistic to me, in a way that negatively inpacted my enjoyment of the book.

charming, witty, thoughtful
Revisado: 08-28-21
This book was not what I expected, I thought it would have more of an educational undertone where John Green explained this era of ours by going through it. That is not what this book is (and I don't know why I thought that). Instead it is a series of touching and funny and sometimes heartachingly sad essays about random things that the author finds interesting and which are part of the anthropocene era. This book was so easy to listen to, that it was over before I noticed it. I mean that in a good way.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

great solarpunk novel
Revisado: 08-23-21
I love this book, it is very charming, the characters are great and the narrator is excellent. But the most endearing part of this book is definitely the worldbuilding. I have never seen such a realistic, beautiful and quite frankly, hopeful, solarpunk world as this one. Science fiction has an inportant place in the world to inspire people and show them what the future can and or will hold. And futures where mankind rethinks its effect on the world and acts accordingly are sparse. This book shows us one possible way how it can be done. I would recommend this book to all people who love science fiction to show them an alternative angle to "post apocalyptic" (sort of) societies

A report on how the greed of a privileged few, subsidized by public funding, creates substantial profits for themselves from mass human suffering. This was a speech given by General Butler during a nationwide tour in the early 1930's, but it applies even more today! Listen as he frankly discusses, from his experience as a career military officer, how business interests commercially benefit from warfare. He then suggests several practical solutions for reducing the pillage.

interesting as an insight
Revisado: 08-17-21
an interesting book not just about Trump family history, but also because the book is a fascinating insight in the daily lives of rich people. If this book is any indication, the lives of people with wealth is nothing like the lives of regular people. After reading a book like this it is hard to believe in the idea of a western meritocracy. this is a book about people who kept failing upwards. The book was well written and easy to listen to. I would recommend it even to people who have no interest in American politics or Trump.
