I love Gabriela Rose!
Revisado: 04-22-23
I didn't think any character could match Stephanie Plum, but I was wrong. Gabriela Rose is thoroughly engaging. Her ex husband is also very appealing. I now have two Janet Evanovich series to love. I can't wait to hear the sequel.

Lots of details
Revisado: 03-25-23
Outside of comic books and superhero movies, the Norse gods are not as well known as the Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythological pantheons. This book provides a ton of information and illustrates the colorful and detailed world of the Norse God's. I always enjoy the books written by Enthralling History, but I don't appreciate Jay Herbert's narration. He reads with a very singsongy inflection that I personally find annoying, distracting and inappropriate for most adult non-fiction books.

Two manuscripts in one audiobook: History of Austria and The Habsburg Empire. When Austrian President Franz Jonas visited the Vatican in 1971, Pope Paul VI named Austria “The Island of the Blessed". He did so to emphasize Austria’s steep recovery. Only 25 years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and Austria was already one of the most prosperous European countries.

Revisado: 05-02-22
In today's world of geopolitics, Austria often stands in the background behind Germany and other European countries, but the reality is that for many centuries, Austria was a powerhouse, giving rise to Holy Roman emperors, as well as kings and queens that ruled outside of the Austrian borders. So much of what Europe is today is a result of the Hapsburgs and other notable Austrian figures. This book is a very comprehensive summation of Austria's contributions to Western Europe and the world.

Two captivating manuscripts in one audiobook: History of the Franks and History of the Lombards. Some of the topics covered in his audiobook include: Where the Franks came from before they moved into Roman Gaul, how the Franks, through military skill and cunning, managed to acquire power, the route the nomadic Lombards followed as they migrated from northern Germany to Italy, and how the Lombards eventually turned against the Romans who invited them to settle in Italy.

Great book
Revisado: 05-02-22
Another interesting read from Captivating History. I learned so much about these two particular Germanic tribes. I had never realized the Lombards were considered a Germanic tribe, which goes to show that people with Germanic ancestry traveled and settled in places far and wide.
The book is full of details, uses good sources, and the narrative flows well. Jason Zenobia is by far the best of the narrators that Captivating History utilizes for its books.

Historia
Cleopatra was a descendant of Ptolemy I Soter, a general who served the legendary Macedonian king Alexander the Great. She reigned over Egypt for nearly 21 years, and she first stepped onto the throne when she was just 18 years old. Her life was full of challenges and treacherous events, but she proved to be one of the most important figures in ancient history. Most historians who wrote about her were heavily influenced by the Romans, who had managed to erase her side of the story. In this audiobook, you will discover the truth about the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt.

Revisado: 05-01-22
The history of Cleopatra and her relationships with her brothers, Julius Caesar, and Marc Antony are fascinating stories, told in an interesting and comprehensive way in this title by Captivating History. The inclusion of so many first-hand accounts and primary sources makes all the Captivating History titles a good resource for one's own library.
I continue to believe that Jay Herbert is not a good narrator for serious, non-fiction titles for adults. His voice is just too sing-songy, and really is better suited for children's books or maybe comedies. Other than that, I think this is another great book.

Two manuscripts in one audiobook: The Weimar Republic and The Treaty of Versailles. How he legally became a dictator by using a democratic process? Or what were the events that led up to his reign of terror? The answers lie in the Weimar Republic. Amid the devastation of World War I, Germany’s monarchy provided no answers. A democratic government seemed the only way to appease Allied nations and solve the many disasters that were already at the country’s doorstep.

Historia
The Catholic Church has a history that spans over 2,000 years, and it began with none other than Jesus Christ himself. At least, that is what modern popes believe. But at first, there was just one church, and there was no division between Catholics, Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, and other branches of Christianity. Christians all over the known world were united, and together, they made their spirituality bloom. Their religion took over the lives of villagers, nobles, kings, queens, and even newly arrived pagan armies that came to conquer Europe.

Have you ever wondered what Japan was like long ago? The Japanese people have had a long and interesting history, filled with warrior queens, emperors, and discoveries that have changed the world. Both parents and children will enjoy learning about Ancient Japan in this fun, up-to-date history of the Japanese people. Did you know that the Japanese were the first people to create pottery? That might not sound important, but there were no plates, bowls, jars, or pots before the ancient people in Japan invented all of that!

Epic story or historical fact? Historians disagree whether the Trojan War was either - or both! Around 1,200 BCE, war raged between the Ancient Greeks and their rivals in Troy. It’s the oldest story in the world, and its account was captured by the Greek poet, Homer. In this amazing and intriguing audiobook, you’ll learn just why this story is still studied in high schools and universities worldwide!

Exciting
Revisado: 04-16-22
The information contained in this book is interesting. The story of the Trojan War is one of the most thrilling. As usual, Captivating History has done an outstanding job of presenting the information in a way that is both informative and still interesting. My only complaint is that Jay Herbert is not the best narrator for serious nonfiction books.

The Cherokee were the first Native American tribe to develop a syllabic written language. They were also the first Native American tribe to have a written constitution and the first Native American tribe to have a newspaper. And the list goes on and on. The Cherokee are one of the most fascinating Indigenous tribes in the United States of America. The Cherokee managed to assimilate themselves within the US. And yet, they were sent far across the country, exiled from their ancestral homelands. What happened on their journey during the Trail of Tears?

So many interesting facts presented
Revisado: 03-28-22
This book lives up to the standards of most of the Captivating History books that I've read or listened to so far. Lots of interesting information and quotes from first-hand or contemporary accounts. The story of the Cherokees, and Native Americans in general, is tragic. Too often the details are hidden or glossed over. It's good to have books like this to bring out the story which deserves to be told. My only complaint is that I don't think Jay Herbert is the right narrator for these types of non-fiction, historical accounts. He did a better job in this book than in others I've heard to not sound quite so sing-songy, but I believe it's just the nature of his voice, which makes him a better fit for narrating the Captivating History for Kids series of audiobooks.
