Historia
The Bible is the world’s most influential book, but do we really know what it says? Every day across social media and in homes, businesses, and public spaces, people try to cut debate short by claiming that "the Bible says so!" However, they commonly disagree about what it actually does and doesn't say, particularly when it comes to socially significant issues. For instance, does the Bible say we should be on the lookout for an antichrist associated with the number 666? Does it say women shouldn’t wear revealing clothing? Does it say it’s okay to hit your kids?

Make this your next listen!
I laughed, I learned…. I love Dan’s calming voice and powerful prose. I love his moving calls to action, and yet his mind-blowing analysis of the issues surrounding the Bible.
This book is also highly accessible for a non-Biblical scholar like me. After listening I bought a hard copy, for myself and for friends and family. If you’re like me and grew up reading Bible stories and listening at Sunday school, you think you know the Bible. Dr. McClellan gives insights that I had never heard anywhere else, and uses solid scholarship to makes his points. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

Social media influencer and podcast host April Ajoy wouldn’t have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song “America Say Jesus” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again.

Deeply touching while being funny and important.
Revisado: 01-17-25
I always love when the author reads their own book, it makes the experience so much better. Since this book is also deeply personal, it makes it like a private conversation with a close friend… one who is funny, smart, witty, and great at analyzing her own past and part in Christian nationalism. Highly recommend.

Gripping, brutal, true crime history
Revisado: 03-15-23
I can’t recommend this enough. The story is gripping and told thoroughly enough without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail. The author narrates the story in a crescendo, so by the end I was just left with my jaw on the floor. I thought it was over and it wasn’t even close. Bravo.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

A must read! Relevant to today’s culture wars and increasing lack of separation of church and state
Revisado: 05-05-22
This book was one of the best I’ve listened to on Audible. The performance by the author was perfect, too, and didn’t distract from the work… which I find common with audio books.

Historia
Ezra Taft Benson is perhaps the most controversial apostle-president in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For nearly 50 years, he delivered impassioned sermons in Utah and elsewhere, mixing religion with ultraconservative right-wing political views and conspiracy theories. His teachings inspired Mormon extremists to stockpile weapons, predict the end of the world, and commit acts of violence against their government.

Puts a partisan apostle into context while humanizing him
Revisado: 12-18-21
Even though I respect him as a prophet myself and even know his grandchildren personally, I have long had a problem with some of the more partisan quotes of Ezra Taft Benson. Friends and family still share some of his quotes, thinking they should represent church doctrine. It was nice to hear the author show how even his contemporaries and peers had a problem with how partisan he was, and how it actually hurt the ability of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to grow and prosper in parts of the world. While parts about spouting conspiracy theories from the John Birch Society surprised me, just how rabidly anti-communist he was did not. I also found it interesting that he changed or softened his rhetoric when he became prophet himself.
Overall, a good book that I’m glad I read.

As America begins to come to terms with the costs of White privilege to Black lives, this book urges a soul-searching examination of the role American Christianity has played in sustaining everyday white supremacy by assuring White people of their innocence. In Mormonism and White Supremacy, Joanna Brooks offers an unflinching look at her own people's history and culture and finds in them lessons that will hit home for every scholar of American religion and person of faith.

A must read for Mormons and non-Mormons who want to understand the church’s history with racism
Revisado: 07-06-21
2020 got me reading a variety of books about American racism, including “Caste,” “The New Jim Crow,” “Color of Law,” and “How to be an Anti-Racist,” in order to understand more completely the issue of racism in America. However, I could not find a reliable book describing the racist history of my own faith, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka LDS or Mormons). This book has been a Godsend (pun intended), and references another book “Religion of another Color” by Paul Reece that I will read next.
To me, this book answers many why questions about the Church’s ban on black Africans holding the priesthood / serving in temples I have been struggling with for decades. It also urges action succinctly like no other book I’ve read on the subject. I listened, but I also just bought the hardcover to share with friends and family… and especially to teach my own children so they don’t grow up and feel disillusioned like I did when I learned of the ban in my later teens.

This is a MUST read. Stop whatever you’re reading and go get this!
Revisado: 09-04-19
I have never pre-ordered a book before this, but General and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis is a personal hero of mine. I named my son after him... But why? Because he embodies values that I long to embody, and hope is passed to that son: nobility, servant leadership, humility while being self confident, intelligence & wisdom, pure heart and motives, decisiveness and being willing to act aggressively and boldly in a cause he believes in with all his heart, patriotic without being nationalist. That’s my assessment, based on what I’ve read and seen... but I believe I’m right. Therefore, I was very excited about this book, and stopped reading two other books to get to this. It did not disappoint. His discussion of military history, doctrine, strategy, and even organization management make this book required reading. Stop whatever book you’re reading and go get this.

Historia
In 2009 Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon and the rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing to shut down Command Outpost Keating, the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the US military in Nuristan and Kunar in the hope of preventing Taliban insurgents from moving freely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three years after Keating's construction, the army was finally ready to concede what the men on the ground had known immediately: It was simply too isolated and too dangerous to defend.
