Historia
Each of the Maguire brothers has his own driving, single-minded obsession. For Jonathan it is his magnificent, talented, and desirable wife, Harriet. For Roger it is the elaborate universe he has constructed in a shed in their parents' garden, populated by millions of tiny insects. While Jonathan's pursuit of Harriet leads him to feelings of jealousy and anguish, Roger's immersion in the world he has created reveals a capability and talent that are absent from his everyday life.

This was an interesting story that deals with 2 brothers and their devotion to each other. The characters are so well developed with many pieces to who they are.

Good story, though slow at first
Revisado: 12-05-24
This was a nice story of a family for generations. I was involved enough to feel really sad when bad things happened and happy when good things happened. For me, the first 4 chapters were too slow. Many readers enjoy having many details, but I got kind of bored at the beginning with just sooo much detail about the debutant ball and wedding. I almost gave up but am glad I didn't because it ended up getting better and I really enjoyed it.

Historia
The Girl of Sugar Beach is the most watched documentary in television history - a riveting, true-life mystery that unfolds over 12 weeks and centers on a fascinating question: Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last 10 years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence. As Sidney begins researching, she uncovers issues that were all overlooked during the original investigation.

An actor is brutally murdered while sitting alone in his fully locked car. A note arrives claiming responsibility and explaining the man died not for who he was, but for who he pretended to be. He played Dr. Watson in a production of Sherlock Holmes. The note promises to kill everybody in Hollywood currently playing Dr. Watson: a surprisingly long list.

Revisado: 05-03-24
I loved the first book in this series. I really loved it. This one sucked. It starts out just so hokey and exaggerated. Like some kind of cartoon. I tried hard to get through it, but just couldn't. I eventually gave up without finishing.

Historia
Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel, have recently retired from the police force. Not ready to give up the life yet, they come up with a proposal for fellow former cop, Laurie Carpenter, and her investigating partner, Marcus. They call themselves the K Team, in honor of Simon. Their first job as private investigators comes to them from Judge Henry Henderson, who's known as a very tough but fair judge, and they've all come up against him in court at one time or another. Though it's hard to believe, Judge Henderson is being blackmailed and extorted.

Where's the dog in this story?
Revisado: 05-03-24
I love books with detectives and their partner dogs. But other than mentioning Simon's name and him being with Cory at times, the dog is barely even in this book. The K Team is missing its K!
The story was interesting in the beginning but kind of lost it's zest about half way through. Great narration.

If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad’s fast-food joint that one day he’d be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he’d be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might’ve asked, “You want fries with that?”

Interesting book and he does a great job narrating. I would like to have learned more about his alcoholism and recovery. He kind of glosses over this. But hey, it's his life and he doesn't have to reveal what he doesn't want to!

As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Not as much "dirt" as I expected
Revisado: 05-03-24
Jill does an excellent job narrating this. It is well written and some parts are very interesting. I guess I'm a bad person because I was expecting more dirt on the inner workings of the Duggar family.

When Marcy Gregg awoke from a coma, 13 years had vanished from her memory. She was 30 years old; she thought she was still 17. She didn’t recognize the man who introduced himself as her husband. She stared at pictures of the three children they said were hers, trying desperately to remember them, but her mind was blank. Terrified and confused, Marcy did the only thing she could think of: she faked it.

Boring, poor narration
Revisado: 05-02-24
As another reviewer mentioned, it is mostly about her relationship with God. Other than that other review, what I had read about this book did not say this was so faith-based. She has many conversations that start out "Lord...." There are many, many quotes from the bible, especially in the last half. I don't see this as a bad thing, it's just not the story I was expecting. The part where she describes waking up in the hospital and what she goes through there is interesting. The rest is not. Details about boring stuff. Even corny at times. It's like she used a thesaurus so she could use (or overuse) many varied adjectives.
This narrator is one of the worst I've heard. When I first listened, she sounded so much like some kind of automated or AI voice that I almost stopped very early on. I decided to give it more time and she improved slightly as the book went on.
I had seen the author on a talk show years ago and she was interesting and a good speaker, but the book doesn't reflect this at all. She probably would have been a better narrator. I must say, her husband is totally a gem for what he did for her during and after he coma. What a great guy!
I think this book should be re-branded to say it's about a woman who overcomes adversity through her relationship with God. That would attract more of an appropriate audience.

Not as good as her other books
Revisado: 03-28-24
I am a huge fan of Elin Hilderbrand. I have listened to several of her audiobooks and loved them. In my opinion, this one is not as good as the others. It’s not awful, but it’s not as good. I almost gave up halfway through but kept going in case it got better.
It was kind of slow. There were too many irrelevant details. The mystery is just not that interesting and the solving of the mystery wasn’t exciting, either. If this had been the first Hilderbrand book I read, I might not bother with another. But I guess not every book by an author is a home run!
Narration was excellent.

Revisado: 03-06-24
Autobiographies are my favorite genre, so I have read/listened to many of them. This is the best autobiographical audiobook that I have every listened to!
The brothers take turns telling about their childhood, their start in show business and their family. I loved hearing about their parents as much as about their careers. There is none of that "woe is me" nonsense in this book. They each appreciate the opportunities they were given in their lives and also recognize what they learned from their failures. They give interesting information about who they worked with. There is no bashing here, while still not feeling phony.
When the recording was over, I was sad and wanted more. You will love this audiobook!
