Historia
The 1990s were a chaotic and utterly magical time for music, a confounding barrage of genres and lifestyles and superstars, from grunge to hip-hop, from sumptuous R&B to rambunctious ska-punk, from Axl to Kurt to Missy to Santana to Tupac to Britney. In 60 SONGS THAT EXPLAIN THE '90s, Ringer music critic Rob Harvilla reimagines all the earwormy, iconic hits Gen Xers pine for with vivid historical storytelling, sharp critical analysis, rampant loopiness, and wryly personal ruminations on the most bizarre, joyous, and inescapable songs from a decade we both regret entirely and miss desperately.

Interesting but too personal
Revisado: 03-20-24
Was hoping for more musical history and insight. And while it’s certainly there, it’s accompanied by too many personal anecdotes.

Historia
When Pete Etchells was 13, his father died from motor neurone disease. In order to cope, he immersed himself in a virtual world - first as an escape, but later to try to understand what had happened. Etchells is now a researcher into the psychological effects of video games, and was co-author on a recent paper explaining why WHO plans to classify "game addiction" as a danger to public health are based on bad science and (he thinks) are a bad idea. In this, his first book, he journeys through the history and development of video games via scientific study....

Not actually a book about video games

Not what was advertised.
Revisado: 01-28-23
I saw this and thought it was going to be some combination of:
- the psychology of playing video games and why people play them
- the effects of playing games and why some like horror or action or fantasy
- a highlight of games that demonstrate these ideas and what made them successful
Instead it’s part biography (too much), part scientific study (but constantly pointing out the inefficiencies of “video game studies” while taking a “my knowledge is superior” tone, and (smallest) part obscure history of video games.
I made it through about 40% of the book before i gave up.

Historia
A mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video-game industry. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video-game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But all that would change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a former Mattel executive who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles.

An inside look into the birth of video games
Revisado: 02-03-22
As someone who grew up in the 90s i witnessed the console wars first hand. Getting an inside look into the events of these two companies was a trip down memory lane.
The performance by the narrator was outstanding. My only nagging feeling about this book was the wonder of how so many private conversations made it into this book. It feels like the author either had some outstanding notes from people with near-perfect memories, or the author embellished a bit. Either way is fine with me but for a factual topic to have such intimate details, i can’t get it out of my mind.
Regardless, if you’re a historian and/or a video game enthusiast, i highly recommend this title!
