Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Presentism ruins everything
Revisado: 10-24-24
This reeked of SJW mentality. This was a character driven novel and characters lacked dimension; if the supporting characters were not helping the main characters then they were portrayed as the worst people imaginable.
No respect for the ideology of the times-it made all people in the 60's seem misogynistic and sexist with no redeeming qualities. We are all products of moden day ideology; especially this author. Ideas change and evolve; that does not mean everyone in 1960s were horroble people. People are more complex and have depth-but not in this book. Author loved SJW ideaology over study of actual history. Also the use of the dog internal monologuing seemed to be bordering on the fantastical. It could be charming but did not work for me. The daughter was also maddening. Just make her a kid; she does not need to be a misunderstood genius. It was so unbelieve I assume it was trying to be fantasy-again, did not work.
Presentism over historic fact. Just made me angry. Writing was good and narration solid. The content was crap.

Historia
What was daily life in Nelson's navy really like, for everyone from the captain down to the rawest recruit? What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of watches? How were the officers and crew paid, and what was the division of prize-money? These questions and many more are answered in Patrick O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy.

His name conjures images of the Wild West–of gunfights, gambling halls, and a legendary friendship with Wyatt Earp–but before Doc Holliday was a Western legend, he was a Southern Son. The story begins in Civil War Georgia, as young John Henry Holliday welcomes home his heroic father and learns a terrible secret about his mother, with his only confidant being his favorite cousin Mattie.

Great story about Doc Holliday's early years. Read the book and enjoyed the Audiobook. Highly recommend for anyone who is interested in Tombstone or the Wild West. Well researched historical fiction-the author made the subject interesting and the story well paced. Look forward to the next two books of the trilogy!

The adventures, romances, and intrigues of King Arthur, Princess Vivien, Queen Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, Morgana Le Fay, and Prince Mordred continue in this second book of A Tetralogy of Tales, a new vision of timeless legends as they have never been told before, in beauty and authentic complexity. His Majesty and the Prince of Lothian is wondrously "what might have been". Narrated by the incomparable Michael Troughton.

Historia
By day, 17-year-old Jo Kuan works as a lady's maid for the cruel daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. But by night, Jo moonlights as the pseudonymous author of a newspaper advice column for the genteel Southern lady, "Dear Miss Sweetie". When her column becomes wildly popular, she uses the power of the pen to address some of society's ills, but she's not prepared for the backlash that follows when her column challenges fixed ideas about race and gender.

Do not read if you are Southern
Revisado: 01-14-22
This is exactly the book I would imagine someone from Southern California to write about Atlanta.
I'm from Georgia and love Atlanta history; which is why I was interested in this book. There is no Atlanta history, the characters are all stereotypes with no depth and the author does not understand the culture.
I would love more history of the Chinese in the south-fantastic topic! This book has nothing to do with that. Most Chinese came to the US via California and the author is from California. Why set it in the South? Because it is a book about hate and overcoming hatred and those who don't know love to put that sticker on the south. Discuss what the Chinese had to overcome in California-it was a lot. In the south minorities had to overcome and to them go the glory. This book is trying to hitch a wagon to their train and it makes me angry.
I understand this is a YA but if the foundation is flawed the building will not stand.
That being said the author is a good writer and the there were good parts. If you don't know history, love stereotypes and hypocrisy then this is for you.

the worst of the series
Revisado: 08-06-20
several main characters are unceremoniously offed in this book, characters that have been around since books one and two. the first couple seem to make sense, and one you even cheer, but the last is so unceremonious and downright needless that it simply ruined the joy these books usually leave me with.
best to stop at book 18 and let the tale end on a high note.

Mom wants to be Sex in the City
Revisado: 10-10-19
Not bad, not good. Trite is the word I would use to summarize this book. Found the main character talking like the mother from Gilmore Girls-which I find annoying. Short story: Mom needs a break, goes to New York and everything every girl wants falls into her lap: hot guy, career advancement, makeover, and national talking point...completely unbelievable. This wanted to be a mix of Gilmore Girl humor and Sex in the City for overtired mothers. I found it a bit annoying. There were good parts; I love books and there was a lot of books discussed. There were a few dialogues that were humorous.
This is chick lit...but not very good chick lit.
If you are an overtired mother looking for an easy light read as to imagine yourself away from your troubles, then this is a book for you. If you are a literature fan in search of a good plot, great character development, book that broaden your horizon or makes you think, then this is not for you.
