Historia
Bridging women's history, the history of the South, and African-American history, this audiobook makes a bold argument about the role of white women in American slavery. Historian Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers draws on a variety of sources to show that slave-owning women were sophisticated economic actors who directly engaged in and benefited from the South's slave market.

New information
Revisado: 02-23-25
I found it interesting that, even in the antebellum period, women could, and did, take legal action to separate their property from their husband’s, and that women also engaged in human trading on their own. Not a happy book, but I had to look evil in its face.

I enjoyed listening to Ms. Hutchinson’s description of her D.C. experiences. Thank goodness she was the one with a conscience, and a personal disturbance of heart until she told the whole truth. Thank you, Ms. Hutchinson, for your strength of character and for your determination to fight for this country of ours.

Rookie Det. Kenda investigates a 1975 case that begins with the murder of a beloved Colorado philanthropist and society figure whose husband, a gambler and womanizer, appears to have an air-tight alibi. Mentored by his veteran partner Det. Lee Wilson, a former Nashville singer turned skilled investigator, Kenda’s case quickly attracts attention from the FBI, CIA, and Interpol, for its similarity to a string of killings involving wealthy married women. All the murders appear to have been committed by a hired professional.

Wow!
Revisado: 07-30-23
First, I would like to thank Mrs. Kenda for all of her sacrifices as a homicide detective’s wife. Thank you, Detective Kenda, for seeking justice for those who cannot seek it for themselves.
I was surprised that this was fiction…I hadn’t paid attention, I simply automatically ordered the new Joe Kenda book, and was a little apprehensive. Disappointed with other fiction authors in the past, I realized that Kenda used his entire palette of experiences to paint a believable crime fiction account. There were times when I started to do internet searches for certain names and I remembered that I was listening to fiction. Yes, I toured Tívoli Gardens on GoogleMaps and I looked at the driving route between Colorado Springs and Vegas, as well (I’ve driven that route a couple of times, myself).
The story was a treat for me, with a very satisfying ending, and I’m glad that I listened. Highly recommended.
P.S. I even enjoyed the two narrators and their facility with voicing for various characters…it was unique, and it helped to keep the various points of view separated.

Well-researched and supported conclusions regarding the death of Dr. Mary Sherman. I appreciated the personal aspect with his father having worked with Sherman.

Very insightful information re:
1. Soft-cell cancers
2. HIV-AIDS
3. Possibly COVID-19 (my assumption)
New information, for me, was offered regarding Lee Oswald, beyond that of “LBJ: The Mastermind…,” or of “Double-cross.” Oswald was certainly used behind the scenes, by the U.S. Government, in the clandestine operations of the lab described in this book.

Historia
Under the Trestle is the true story of the most compelling murder case in Virginia history. In 1980, Gina Renee Hall, a Radford University freshman, went to a Virginia Tech nightclub on a Saturday night. She was never seen again. Her abandoned car was found parked beneath a railroad trestle bridging the New River, with blood in the trunk. The investigation led police to a secluded cabin on Claytor Lake, where there was evidence of a violent attack. Former Virginia Tech football player Stephen Epperly was charged with murder, despite the fact that Gina's body was never found.

I finally got around to listening to this book. I appreciate the details. I felt transported in time, as if I’d been there. Spoiler alert: Gina’s DNA and partial remains were discovered in different areas, starting with the lake house, in July 2020. Apparently, she had been dismembered (I suspected this), and her body parts were buried in various remote places. Do an internet search with her name, adding “DNA found.” I appreciate that this book prompted me to dig deeper and to go beyond, for more information.

One of the most feared Chicago mobsters, Sam Giancana, clawed his way to the top of the Mafia hierarchy by starting as a hit man for Al Capone. He was known as one of the best vehicle escape artists, a tenacious business man, and a ruthless killer. He partied with major stars such as Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe and did business with agents ranging from the CIA to the Vatican to the shah of Iran. When politician Joe Kennedy gave Giancana the chance to use mob muscle to get his son John elected, Giancana jumped at the task.

A huge puzzle piece
Revisado: 05-28-23
Remembering the JFK funeral, when I was 4-1/2, and later becoming friends with the daughter of Ted Callaway (the former Marine who found Officer Tippit), I’ve been casually interested in the assassination. Not realizing that this book would relate to that event, and others, I found this fascinating. The information is about as close as one can get, and it dovetails with other accounts. I’m glad that I purchased this selection.

Historia
Americans tend to cast slavery as a pre-modern institution - the nation's original sin, perhaps, but isolated in time and divorced from America's later success. But to do so robs the millions who suffered in bondage of their full legacy. As historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States.

This was a difficult book because of the raw, and necessary, facts that were presented. Sometimes I had to stop and listen to lighter reading in order to process everything. THIS is the history that needs to be included, adjusted for age, in public schools.
