Historia
The Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in a changing United States, their fortune made through the entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now it's 1910, and the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties, finding their way and finding love—even where they’re not supposed to.

Emotional and beautifully performed
Revisado: 04-14-24
The glamor of high society contrasts elegantly with feelings of being trapped or stuck in this intertwining story about four young women hoping to lead very differently empowered lives. All the characters are deep and interesting, with distinct personalities. The narrator brings all their feelings to life, with hard moments delivered with a quaver that sounds like she's holding back tears (without being overwrought or distracting).

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Wholesome and Delightful
Revisado: 10-03-23
CW: this book includes some brief mentions of traumatic events, including the emotional neglect and both emotional and physical abuse of children.
This is a wonderful and lovingly crafted story of how adults carry and - sometimes - leave behind their childhood trauma to create a better world for each other and their loved ones. Mika is a delightful protagonist, an optimist with a painful past who bridges the gap with her love of magic and nature. All the characters are well rounded, their love and friendship and fights believable. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The narrator also does a great job of making everyone's voice distinct, so that you can tell who is speaking even in single lines with no narration.

Thoughtful, thought-provoking, and cozy
Revisado: 04-26-23
Listening to this podcast feels like being at a party, meeting a friend of a friend, and finding out you have a lot in common.
On the activism end, the guests aren't presented as paragons, but as people doing their best. On the fandom end, you get a lot of insight into what inspired the guests to take up their causes, without shying away from the problems in the media that inspire them. The message is very much "let's all drink tea and try to make the world better." It's a really interesting format that makes the activists feel really approachable and makes activism feel achievable.
Sabrina (the host) does a really good job of balancing the discussion between problems and solutions-in-progress. She asks really insightful questions and the guests are very open about their experiences, so even for episodes where I'm not in the Fandom, I'm very engaged. All I want to know is, Star Wars episode when?

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city's ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

This is a story about three idiot wannabe detectives: J.J. and Valentine Watts and their new friend Trudi de la Rosa. Again, they’re idiots, but in a fun way where they go on adventures and occasionally use swear words. In this book, they’re riding a train on official Ghost Hunters Adventure Club business when an old friend from the past shows up to ruin everything. It’s up to our three young adventurers to solve the mystery of the Express Train to Nowhere before they’re locked away forever for a crime they didn’t even commit.

I love Dr. Cecil's performance of this tale, even if it is a story about reckless idiots with no regard for the law, train related or otherwise.
Another delightful mystery with intriguing characters and plenty of fun twists.

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares.

The most wholesome entry in the saga
Revisado: 11-26-20
And I thought Civil Campaign was cute! This book is like Bujold looked at the Vorkosigan saga and said, "Well I have populated my space epic with enough death and war, I think. Time for a 100% wholesome story of family and love." The climactic battle is a firework accident at a picnic. I love this whole series, but Jole and Cordelia are so exactly what I need right now that I'm going to reread this book immediately!

Historia
The popular adventures of Miles Vorkosigan, a clever and outlandish science fiction hero for the modern era, continue in these three tales. In The Mountains of Mourning, Miles is dispatched to a back-country region of Barrayar, where he must act as detective, judge, and executioner in a controversial murder case. In Labyrinth, Miles adopts his alternate persona as Dendarii Mercenary Admiral Naismith for an undercover mission to rescue an important research geneticist from Jackson’s Whole. And in the title story, Miles infiltrates an escape-proof Cetagandan POW camp.

Not enough stars available!
Revisado: 10-29-20
I've long been a fan of Bujold, but these short stories absolutely take the cake. As usual, each issue in the story - humanity, ethics, the nature of hope - is taken at both the philosophical and personal level. Labyrinth was my favorite, but the other two stories balance it very well. the collection flows naturally from a deeply personal story with a cast of 10 to a major military operation on the order of thousands, so seamlessly you barely notice. The politics are almost on a level with her novel Cetaganda, so there's something in this collection for everyone. I truly wish I could give this collection 6 stars!

Historia
Miles Vorkosigan graduates from the Barrayaran Military Academy with high expectations of ship command, but is disappointed with an assignment as meteorologist to Lazkowski Base, an arctic training camp. His tenure in the windy, snow-covered north is cut short when Miles narrowly averts a massacre between the trigger-happy base commander and mutinous recruits. After a brief stay under 'house arrest', Miles is re-assigned to investigate a suspicious military build-up near a wormhole nexus.

LMB is a genius
Revisado: 10-18-20
McMaster Bujold has such a talent for escalation. You think you're at the climax of the story, then realize you're only in Chapter 8. Miles continues to fail upwards, apologetically dodging his superiors who don't see the whole picture like he does. He's the best flawed genius in sci fi and is so fascinating to read.
I took a star off Performance only because the pronunciatuon of a few words from earlier in the series changed, which was a bit confusing. otherwise I'm really into the narrator, whose diction is excellent.
