Not particularly inspiring for Christmas
Revisado: 12-14-19
What's with having a creepy ghost story in a compilation for Christmas? Just not enough Christmas themed content.

The years between 1760 and 1800 rocked the Western world. These were the years when colonists on the eastern fringes of a continent converted the ideals of Enlightenment thought first into action, then into an actual form of government. Now you can learn why this happened and how the colonists did it-in a series of 48 insightful lectures from an award-winning teacher and author.

Missing the implications of religious faith
Revisado: 12-07-19
I give this audio book (lecture series) only 4 stars because the material seems to intentionally skirt the implications and impact of spiritual faith, religiously based morality and ethics, and personal devotion to God. Mr. Mancall presents an incredible and extensive integration of many social and political facets in his narrative. I am thoroughly impressed and appreciative for how he assembled his information and organized its order and level of detail. I have gained much in listening through his rich material. However, he tends to scoff at the legitimacy and merit of statements of faith and choices made based on religious convictions as having bearing on his topic, the origins and ideologies of the American revolution. That has been rather disappointing. Notwithstanding, this lecture series is a great reminder of what brought about a great conundrum, a rebellion and revolution by many people aspiring to a society that celebrates liberty and divinely grounded virtue in constructive and enjoyable life and governance.

Historia
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.

Typical Sci Fi, strongly preachy, risqué
Revisado: 10-31-17
Well written, setting well described with rich deep characters. I found the frequent allusions and moral conclusions for current political and social controversies to be too different in many respects from my perspective and values to be easily enjoyed. Sexual themes very strongly presented, probably should not be shared with young children in families with conservative moral values.

Well-rounded, thorough, and not bulletproof
Revisado: 10-07-17
As much as this audiobook presented material that was often presented in a dry, systematic manner, the narrator and the material hit the mark of completing a sweeping response to all the complaints about the morality of God, His people, and the Law of Moses based on events and teachings in the Old Testament. I was impressed that, as different topics and questions were addressed, I might think of a question or issue with the logic or information presented, and then, before the discussion of the topic was complete, those questions and issues were often addressed! :) I say that Mr. Copan's material isn't bulletproof as an apologetic because folks' perspectives on these topics and questions may not be satisfied with answers like 'the situation was a significant moral upgrade of existing social values' or things like that. For people who see themselves as having a superior intellect and moral foundation to which God must answer, some of Dr. Copan's arguments and conclusions will come short. But within faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ and Him being the fulfillment of the Law and the revelation of God's character in light of that Law, it is a very powerful and condensed refutation of neo-atheist criticisms.

Marvelous contemporalization of a Gospel account
Revisado: 03-24-15
"This is a work of fiction." Yes, but Mr. Myers does an amazing job that is relevant and compelling. Thank you! For anyone open to getting to understand why the person Jesus Christ has caused such a ruckus in the world, this book shows how personal His life is for each and every person on the planet. Mr. Myers' imagination has not set forth a pan-cultural example. This one applies pretty clearly just to the USA. But in its essential message and demonstration of the love, grace, justice, and mercy of God, this story beings home to the here-and-now the person Jesus of Nazareth. Well done, Mr. Myers.

Wish I had known
Revisado: 07-04-08
Wish I had know the author was into horror, or at least macabre drama. I got kinda tired listening to it after a while. The autobiographical snippets were interesting, but also sadly glib. Not really my cup of tea, although the voice acting is actually pretty well done.
