Historia
When you spend all day in a studio shooting a YouTube series about drinking, things can run off the rails in a hurry, and carefully managing that chaos is vital if you’re going to make a show like How to Drink, and that’s what Greg & Meredith have done for years. Here at Midnight Local we give into that chaos and let the rails be damned. These are the conversations that make you pause the movie because it just can't wait. Things like how the Hays Code destroyed cinema from 1934 - 1968, why David Lindelof should never be able to hold a pen again, and the fact that Joss Whedon doesn't live ...

I started watching this because I loved Greg and Merideth's tangents on Greg's YouTube channel, How to Drink. It doesn't disappoint. Give it a shot.

Historia
Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus, and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small planet home. Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war.

Robert Jordan would be proud
Revisado: 04-26-23
This is a strange middle book. It sets up events but resolves very little. There is great character development, though, and worldbuilding. While I can see why some folks have issues with it, I'm a fan.

In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter.

Another great radio drama
Revisado: 05-23-22
Act Two is more a series of quasi- connected vignettes than Act One, but another bombshell. Listen to Act One first, obviously. Story and narration kills. I'll honestly be pleasantly shocked if the live action adaptation is half as good.

A fun read
Revisado: 10-21-19
This was a fun take on the vampire myth. As much as I love Ron Pearlman, though, I can't say I particularly enjoyed his narration. While his voice is excellent, all the characters come out as Ron Pearlman, albeit occasionally with an accent.

Not worth the time
Revisado: 09-04-17
This novels struggles to be an epic fantasy but gets bogged down with drivel. I was done with this almost from the beginning, but forced myself to go on in the hope that things would get better. They didn't.
There are 3 main faults with this story:
1) the author spends far too much time explaining the minutia of, well, everything;
2) he LOVES telling the reader how they should feel or think rather than letting them form their own opinions;
3) characters are driven by the plot rather than driving it.
I honestly believe this novel could have been salvaged by a decent editor, as it does have some interesting elements. As it stands, while I grew more interested toward the end, I just don't care enough about the characters, the plot, or the setting to bother continuing the series.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Disappointing and probably not the end
Revisado: 04-02-17
Big bad defeated by two MacGuffins and a Deus ex Machina. Sequel probably in works. Background and otherwise bland characters are suddenly built up just to make their deaths meaningful. The author ties up enough loose ends to satisfy many readers while posing enough questions to justify continuing things. The main saving grace are Kramer and Reading who are wonderful, as ever.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

The Etymologicon is a completely unauthorized guide to the strange underpinnings of the English language. It explains: How you get from “gruntled” to “disgruntled”; why you are absolutely right to believe that your meager salary barely covers “money for salt”; how the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world (hint: Seattle) connects to whaling in Nantucket; and what precisely the Rolling Stones have to do with gardening.
