Great Storyline

Character/world building could be stronger but overall good. My only issue is with Genya. I was expecting a strong character but he continued to disappoint as he flew from crisis to crisis on the backs of his terrible suppositions. His inability communicate, lack of awareness, and perpetual victimhood are exhausting. In all honesty, breaks were needed to get through the book. It's amazing how a character can be so weak and traumatized yet so self-absorbed.

Love the series, but the new narrator...

I absolutely love this series. In anticipation of the release of this new book, I listened to the entire collection starting at book 1 again. At the moment I can't focus on the story. The new narrator lacks an elegance in tone and cadence that was ever present with Davina Porter and somewhat with Jenny Sterlin. I'm about 15 minutes in and not a single character has remotely the same accents or inflections. Very distracting, I'll put this one down for a bit in the hope I will have an easier listen later.

Another reviewer said that the MC was a little dense. I have to agree, but not just a little. It's beyond me how a 22yr old working in a bar/brothel could be so unaware of human nature. Absolutely no intuition and zero critical thinking skills. I get that she is impetuous and idealistic but she propels herself from assumption to assumption without a single breath of thought. Im crossing my fingers she develops in the second book. Overall, the story is good.

Almost completely exhausting

Loved most of the story but the main character's continuous assumptions are exhausting. I guess there wouldn't be much of a story if the characters had basic communication skills.

I started this book with no expectations and was surprised that I was immediately invested within the first few chapters. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Too many POVs

There are too many entering and exiting characters with little to no background. From the start I felt confused and barely able to understand the multiple prospectives. The most annoying one is when Emily addresses the reader directly. There are so many abrupt turns that make little sense. One character is an upper middle class lady who disappears, attempts suicide, plots to frame her husband with murder, ends up in an asylum, and now a talented forger, burgler, and con. I almost got to the end but it's too ridiculous, thank goodness I didn't waste a credit for the book.

What happened to the narrator?

The breathy whispering tone that was adopted in this book wasn't in the previous ones. Very distracting and somewhat annoying.

Update: I increased the speed to 1.10, and the narration improved drastically.

I had high hopes but this one is a return.

I really wanted to like this book but after 15 chapters of characters that haven't developed for two whole books, I just can't. It seems as if a complete lack of communication and willful ignorance propels them from one self-induced crisis to the next.

Overwhelmingly tedious!

I had very high hopes after book 1. However, Blade Breaker moves at a glacial pace regurgitating established scenes and sentiment well past the point of tedium. Climactic moments are never realized cliffhangers that only diminish the story and make this a very difficult listen, you can almost visualize a televised cut to commercial. I believe this is a good story and want to love it but just can't.

Good overall

I love character development but there were sooooo many overarching storylines taking place under the purple moon the listen approached tedium. I had to stop once or twice but very happy I stuck with it. Maybe it was the author's plan to exasperate me to truly hook me in for the closing and next book. I absolutely can't wait for the finale!
