Lots of good potential, but stilted dialog

The conclusion to this series is a little disappointing. I liked Book 1, and thought the characters were pretty well developed. But but by the third book, the stilted dialog and excessive praying got so distracting that it made it hard to enjoy. The antagonist character's downward spiral via a series of bad choices and poor justifications actually showed some promise of skilled character examination. So the simplistic plot resolution was a disappointing way to end that.

Plausibility problems

Predictable. Doesn't really bring anything new to the genre. Scenario is a rapid pandemic, that plays in out a matter of days, leaving between 2% and 8% survivors. Naturally, the story centers on the typical crusty, secretly heartbroken, hero who bugs out to the mountains. Because that where ALL survivors go, of course. The hero rounds up a small group of allies, and then fights off the rest of the remaining survivors, who have gone ferally evil.

The problem with this scenario is that the rapid pandemic progress would leave tons of resources behind in the stores and houses. There's very little reason for the evil ones to think that taking from the heroes holed up in an isolated cabin on a mountain is easier than just busting into the nearest mall or grocery store. Once the scenario is setup, there's no plausibility to the climax sequence.

None of these stories ever answer the question of WHY someone turns evil. WHY is taking from a fellow survivor easier than taking from an abandoned store or house? Write the story that explains that, and you might do something to elevate the genre.

Not your typical EMP apocalypse story.

I enjoyed this, but it's not your typical EMP apocalypse story. Does not go where you expect it to. This one is more about relationships, love triangles, and how we all affect each other's lives. Frankly, the book could have been written without the EMP event, and still have arrived at the same ending.

Not quite sure why I keep coming back to this series. I'm entertained, in spite of the wildly implausible scenario. If you've gotten this far along, it's not much of a spoiler to explain that part of the story revolves around Texas seceding from the United States. There's all kinds of plausibility problems with this, that haven't been, and probably won't be addressed. In spite of that, I keep on listening. Can't quite figure out what keeps bringing me back.

I read alot in this sub-genre; and am pretty disappointed by the one-sided portrayal of American society. Everything is all or nothing, black or white, "either you're on my side, or you're the enemy" attitude. This particular book is just another example of that pattern. Come' on, writers, broaden your horizons, try considering some other points of view. Just because someone disagrees with your political or religious points of view, does not make them an evil person. Religion does not have a monopoly on morality. It IS possible to be a good person, without being a religious one.
