Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Larsons best

I loved this book. It has all the signature elements of a Larson book, but he’s managed to shave away is worst impulses.
Very entertaining and interesting.

Historia
As American politics descends into a battle of anger and hostility between two groups called "left" and "right," people increasingly ask: What is the essential difference between these two ideological groups? In The Myth of Left and Right, Hyrum Lewis and Verlan Lewis provide the surprising answer: nothing. As the authors argue, there is no enduring philosophy, disposition, or essence uniting the various positions associated with the liberal and conservative ideologies of today.

Obvious and elegant
Revisado: 10-03-23
The authors’ argument is one of those arguments that’s so obvious once you hear it that you begin to wonder why the argument needed to be made.
Very convincing, clarifying, and needed.
My biggest critique is that they take a naive approach to parties and over apply the essentialist model.
For example, it’s probably not the essentialist model that’s blocking new party formation, but the myriad election rules that favor the parties built up over the last century and the money needed to win elections.
Essentially it’s structural barriers to entry, not the myth they knock down.
Regardless, the authors convinced me the myth exists and that it creates lots of problems for our democracy.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

An inspiring and fascinating story
Revisado: 06-08-23
I always love the narrative detail that Erik Larson weaves from real historical accounts.
My only critique is that sometimes the story loses the through line and veers into less interesting digressions (at least for me).
Incredible that a people could have so much resolve and courage.

In this three-part research series, he does just that for big debt crises and shares his template in the hopes of reducing the chances of big debt crises happening and helping them be better managed in the future.

Historia
For decades, Peter F. Drucker was widely regarded as "the dean of this country's business and management philosophers" ( Wall Street Journal). In this concise and brilliant work, he looks to the most influential position in management - the executive. The measure of the executive, Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done". This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive.

Read it before reading other books in this genre.

Historia
What's happening in global politics? As if overnight, many Democrats revolted and passionately backed a socialist named Bernie Sanders; the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union; the vituperative billionaire Donald Trump became the presidential nominee of the Republican party; and a slew of rebellious parties continued to win elections in Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Austria, and Greece. John B. Judis, one of America's most respected political analysts, tells us why we need to learn about the populist movement.

Relevant and interesting but could be better

Relevant and interesting but a bit cursory and lacks a strong point of view. Would have liked more date and explanation of why neoliberalism have become the dominant orthodoxy.

Amazing motivational speaking, OK content
Revisado: 09-05-17
The Audiobook is a great listen because the voice delivery is amazing. This book inspired me to dream big and act big.
Conceptually, however, it was a bit superficial and anecdotal. No research and only a little logic backed up his points. It was mostly his worldview and experience packaged as assertions.
Also, the structure was meandering and overlapping.
But if your looking for something to pump you up to take action, it's definitely worth the listen.

I really appreciate Medina's structure and empirical approach to parenting approaches.

Truly inspiring and thought provoking
Revisado: 05-04-16
I absolutely loved this book. Though it dragged on a bit because it was so detailed, those details really make you feel like you get to know the man personally. Having just finished, I'm sad. I feel like I lost a friend.
There is a lot inspiring in this book, but what I will take away is this: that Walt was a very imperfect person with lots of faults and foibles, but he managed to change the world.
