Joanne Harris has told the old Norse tales of the gods from a modern and unique perspective: Loki's. And Allan Corduner has captured Loki's "I really couldn't help myself,, I am a child of Chaos, after all" tone and temperament in such a way that it simply comes alive with wit and mischief. The book is fun to read, but a absolute delight to listen to.

Miriam Margolyes has a splendid treasure: her voice. By turns light, airy, funny, provocative, sad, or despondent, she brings to wonderful life the women, both real and imagined, who peopled Charles Dickens's life. This recording of the stage play (co-written by Ms. Margoleyes herself) is a joy to listen to. Give your ears - and imagination - a treat by experiencing it as soon as possible. You won't regret it.

This, the fourth book of H.Y. Hannah's Cottage Garden Mystery series, is the first recorded version I've listened to. I enjoyed it immensely. My mind was kept busy following leads (and red herrings) while my hands were occupied with other things. Above all, I could keep track of the myriad threads of the larger story rather than reading only a few pages before going to sleep at night and forgetting the wealth of details Ms. Hanna stuffs into her mysteries. I recommend this whole heartedly for busy people who love cozies.

Anything written by Neil Gaiman has a whiff of magic and a touch of the supernatural, while everything read by Neil Gaiman carries his own particular sense of the story, including a hint of dry humor when appropriate.

The stories in this book are charming and the scary bits are only a little scary; they are meant to make you think, not tremble in your bed at night.

I think this book should be classified under the "if you're old enough to read, you're old enough to read this." And don't think you're too old to read them. These stories have a timeless character to them that will appeal to everyone.

Corey Olsen has provided a literary analysis of the themes that flow through The Hobbit, and traced the emotional growth of Bilbo, Thorin, Thranduil, and others that makes this story so satisfying. Additionally, Professor Olsen analyses the various poems found throughout the book, bringing anyone who either casually reads the poems or skips them altogether to a deeper understanding of how the poems both fit in the story and show the character of the speaker (or speakers).

Altogether, this is a satisfying book, whether you read it or listen to Professor Olsen read it.

A fail for the narration

Angela Dawe has perfect pronunciation and clear enunciation, however listening to her read this book was like listening to a weather report: Rain will continue this morning but an incoming high pressure system will bring sun by this afternoon.... In other words, the presentation was flat, emotionless, with very little distinction between the characters' voices, and although the Italian was spoken perfectly, it was with an American accent. As a result, though I generally enjoy listening to recorded books, I gave this one up a quarter of the way through and turned to the ebook to finish it.

First rate narration

Revisado: 05-03-17

This book might be a bit of a slog for modern readers, but William Dufries's narration makes it a joy. Not only does he "do the voices," but he also lends each sentence the humor, satire, or pathos called for in the story. The laughter, the tears, the wonder of each character is brought marvelously to life and I found myself as affected by the writing as would a contemporary of Twain listening to the great man reading it aloud himself.

Lilting Irish

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-21-17

To rate this first as an audio book, I have to say the lilting cadence of the Irish speakers that Sue Pitkin gave was wonderful to hear. It's something that, as an American, would have been lost to me had I simply read the book.

The book itself was altogether different than I expected. Even after the first eight or nine chapters, I thought this was going to be the story of a woman, Ruth, who gained self-confidence through identifying with the occult and the goddess Dana. I could not have been more wrong. Ruth did gain self-confidence, and she also gained two of the three wishes she made of the goddess, but in the most natural way. The ending was entirely satisfying, both for Ruth and for her doctor, who was having problems of his own.

For those to whom it matters, this is a clean read. Nothing worse than an occasional "bitch" is used that I can recall in the "swearing" category, and no sex or salacious language is used, though an adulterous affair is implied and a woman confesses to having been raped years before.

Full of authentic detail.

Revisado: 04-17-17

I enjoyed listening to this book, which tells the tale of Elizabeth, a privileged Southern daughter, and Mattie, the field slave chosen to be her wet nurse. The story is full of detail without it reading as though the author is saying "look at all the research I did." The ending is wistful and makes me happy that we in America no longer need to worry about the propriety of having friends of differing races.

Another fine seminar.

Total

Revisado: 07-11-16

Like THE HERO'S TWO JOURNEYS, which Vogler did with Michael Hauge, this is a recording of a seminar. In this one, Volger goes into greater depth talking about-- and giving examples of-- the hero's journey, as well as some of the archetypal characters the hero meets along the way. He gives many examples from well-known films, although he stresses the way a novelist can use the same information in his or her book. One nice addition is that many of the attendees of the lecture were able to ask questions about applying what Vogler taught to their own stories. Very enlightening.
