Historia
Violence in the Old Testament has long been a stumbling block for Christians and skeptics alike. God Is a Man of War offers a fresh interpretation of Old Testament accounts of violence, by exploring them through the twofold lens of Orthodox tradition and historical context. Father Stephen De Young examines what these difficult passages reveal about the nature of Christ and His creation, bearing witness to a world filled not only with pain and suffering - often of human making - but also with the love of God.

great intellectual presentation
Revisado: 01-06-22
the topics presented in this book need to be discussed more frequently. I think some people struggle to think outside of particular western paradigms of scholarship and need this type of presentation to challenge their contemporary presumptions. I appreciate the reminders in the book that these were communities of people with similar social, political, and personal issues and ideas and language morphology must consider these things in context to these.

Historia
Rev. Dr. Stephen De Young, creator of the popular The Whole Counsel of God blog and podcast, traces the lineage of Orthodox Christianity back to the faith and witness of the apostles, which was rooted in a first-century Jewish worldview. The Religion of the Apostles presents the Orthodox Christian Church of today as a continuation of the religious life of the apostles, which in turn was a continuation of the life of the people of God since the beginning of creation.

fair review
Revisado: 10-08-21
a lot of people are critiquing this book as an academic book. this is not an academic book.
this book is more like a textbook with limited citations. much of what's presented is common knowledge to students of theology and history and language.
the book should encourage many to analyze the epistemology of their beliefs.

Historia
It is precisely where we hurt most that the experience of the Orthodox Church has much to offer. The remedy is not a pep talk, or any simple admonitions to fight the good fight, cheer up, or think positively. Rather, the Orthodox method is to change the way we look at the human person (starting with ourselves). According to two thousand years of experience, Orthodoxy shows us how to "be transformed by the renewing of our mind" - a process that is aided by participation in the traditional ascetic practices and Mysteries of the Church.

Historia
In The Conquest of Bread, first published in 1892, Kropotkin set out his ideas on how his heightened idealism could work. It was all the more extraordinary because he was born into an aristocratic land-owning family - with some 1,200 male serfs - though from his student years his liberal views and his fixation on the need for social change saw him take a revolutionary path. This led rapidly to decades of exile. It is a passionate, even a fierce polemic for dramatic social change.

innovative for it's time
Revisado: 07-15-19
this should be read from the time period in which it was written, it will be misunderstood otherwise. even for it's time it had sophomoric and exaggerated claims of utopian like qualities. moreover it has an emphasis on cooperation with the belief that the existing system was not birthed and maintained with the same cooperation that he romanticized about. I think this is interesting for it's historical value, but not a good strategy because people overall do not want or desire to live without personal property.

Comprehensive defense of Christianity
Revisado: 05-21-19
historians and theologians agree that Orthodoxy was and is the Faith passed down throughout the centuries, setting and maintaining the standard of what Christianity is. This book details the weaknesses and heresies found in Protestant groups, especially American types and why Protestants should question the origin and authenticity of what they believe. According to the author, these groups have reconstructed and reduced Christianity to a shadow. The main issue stemming from a reduction in understanding of Grace, leading to a reduction in Salvation, leading to anything goes Christianity abolishing the foundation delivered by the Apostles and Church Fathers. The author cites how the modern Protestant church groups lost their way setting aside ecumenical council and Canon aimed at protecting the laity and clergy from heresy and abuse.

Mary the prototype
Revisado: 04-17-19
as a Protestant I think it is to easy to ignore the truth about Mary and the Jewish roots of Christianity. Orthodoxy seems to be a bastion of faith holding up what Christ and the Apostles laid.

Historia
Instead of being merely the receiver of the parents' psychological and spiritual legacy, children function as ushers of the parents' development. Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. To handle the behavior that results, traditional books on parenting abound with clever techniques for control and quick fixes for dysfunction. In Dr. Shefali Tsabary's conscious approach to parenting, however, children serve as mirrors of their parents' forgotten self.
