Historia
What makes a good life? The question is inherent to the human condition, asked by people across generations, professions, and social classes, and addressed by all schools of philosophy and religions. This search for meaning, as Yale faculty Miroslav Volf, Matthew Croasmun, and Ryan McAnnally-Linz argue, is at the crux of a crisis that is facing Western culture, a crisis that, they propose, can be ameliorated by searching, in one’s own life, for the underlying truth.

Esoteric, But Interesting
Revisado: 01-12-25
A Philosophy and Theology text. The questions were probing, and insightful. It is less a self-help and more a college text written to prompt self-reflections. Overall, I liked it, but probably not the book I was looking for at this moment.

Historia
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house. Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

A Walkabout, throughly enjoyed this story
Revisado: 08-03-24
I was attracted to this story by the coast to coast hike, but the complicated, flawed and real characters keep me going. I loved the first person alternating narration by our two main characters. These two characters are broken by love, and searching for their next love. I especially enjoyed the ending. Buy this book and thank my later.

Historia
For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds. This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

Hormone Replacement Therapy on Rye
Revisado: 07-20-24
This is a great summer read. The narrator does a great job of bringing the story to life. Lots of relatable topics for women in their 50s, trying to juggle young adult kids and aging parents. At times I laughed out loud and at other times I wanted to cry.
Good story, worth a listen.

Fall in Love with Alua, listen to this book!
Revisado: 05-10-24
I listened to this book after seeing Alua Arthur’s Ted Talk (which was excellent).
This book was so honest, insightful and beautiful in the messiest sort of way. She is so vibrant and alive, and she found a way to be of service in our society that avoids and repels any discussion of death.
With Alua’s help, I started a Death journal for my family, filled with wishes, hopes and love. I have lived my life with vibrancy (like Alua), but I plan to step it up a notch;) I have worked hard to let people in my life felt seen. I want to be a friend to Alua, and this book was her offering to all of us, young, old and curious. Our brief, precious, messy life is limited, this book helps you focus on living well and dying on your own terms when you exit this realm. Download the book, you won’t regret it.
With love, Patricia

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

This Book Knocked Me Off My Feet
Revisado: 10-13-23
Lessons in Chemistry was so much more than I expected. I was completely drawn in by the characters they were rich and human, asked questions, made mistakes, and tried again like the scientific method. The author deftly delved into so many topics and was able to weave these topics together in a cohesive storyline: sexism, illegitimate children, sexual assault, love, homophobia, chemistry, abandonment and my personal favorite, chosen family. As a dog lover, 6:30 was an added gem to the phenomenal list of characters, a personal favorite. As a woman of 58, I have seen decades of sexism and it is good to remember how far we have come, but how much farther we have to go to gain actual equality. Thank you Bonnie Garmus. I see you and I like you. Please don’t hesitate to download this book!

Historia
Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo - he's just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him.

Good Beginner Book on Letting Go
Revisado: 10-06-23
This was a good, basic book about minimalism. I didn’t hear any new ideas in this book, but I did feel it was a refresher course. I felt some of his ideas were juvenile. This is a person that doesn’t have children and doesn’t live with a partner. So it’s much easier to remove things from your life, especially sentimental items when you are the only one you have to consider.
Philosophically I had some problems with a few things he said, using Steve Jobs and Marcus Zuckerberg as examples. These are not minimalist people, they should be role models, even if their wardrobe is simple.
In the end, if you want a basic book to get you started, this could be helpful. I’ve been following theminimalist.com for years and I hadn’t heard anything new in this book. It was an easy listen on my walks. For my minimalist journey, I have found that slow and steady wins the day. Less is more, and spending time with people and creating experiences is where it is at. Good luck on your journey.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

I wanted to love this book
Revisado: 08-07-23
The Covenant of Water is a sweeping tale set in India and covers over 70 years and multiple generations. I found the first half of the book interesting, especially the details of daily life in this region of India. In my mind, the story started getting repetitive near the middle and the length of the book can wear the reader down. I was putting the narrative strands together and found the second half of the book predictable. If you want a tomb of a story that reads more like a fable, this may be the book for you, he lost me as a reader at about 60% of the way into the book and I jumped to the end, which I almost never do. It is an homage to his family and native country wish was endearing, just too long.

Historia
Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Historia
For years Charlie Burrell and his wife, Isabella Tree, farmed Knepp Castle Estate and struggled to turn a profit. By 2000, with the farm facing bankruptcy, they decided to try something radical. They would restore Knepp’s 3,500 acres to the wild. Using herds of free-roaming animals to mimic the actions of the megafauna of the past, they hoped to bring nature back to their depleted land. But what would the neighbors say, in the manicured countryside of modern England where a blade of grass out of place is considered an affront?

Hooray for Nature, Hooray for Rewilding
Revisado: 05-19-23
Lovely text and narration, this book doesn’t shy away from all the perspectives of Rewilding. Isabell Tree has done a lovely job explaining and not simplifying their efforts to fight for our wild areas. 3% of meadows remain in the UK, hard to believe, but makes me want to try my hand at Rewinding. Listen to this book, it is fascinating and educational at the same time.
