Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Can’t get past unlikable heroine
Revisado: 07-18-22
I don’t understand the praise for this book. As others have noted, characters are one-note and clichéd. And the heroine is not likable at all! Then amidst all the social criticism and depressing situations, the dog turns out to have the intelligence of a person. What?! Couldn’t finish this one. Hard pass.

Historia
Hollow’s Edge use to be a quiet place. A private and idyllic neighborhood where neighbors dropped in on neighbors, celebrated graduation and holiday parties together, and looked out for one another. But then came the murder of Brandon and Fiona Truett. A year and a half later, Hollow’s Edge is simmering. The residents are trapped, unable to sell their homes, confronted daily by the empty Truett house, and suffocated by their trial testimonies that implicated one of their own. Ruby Fletcher. And now, Ruby’s back.

Believe the bad reviews
Revisado: 08-24-21
Terrible narration, unlikable characters, unbelievable plot, and repetitive, plodding writing. Don't waste a credit on this one.

Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on.

Best bang for your credit!
Revisado: 09-29-20
I’ve loved all the Cormoran Strike books, and this may be my favorite. The characters and settings are completely engrossing. I was ecstatic to see it was over 31 hours, and it still went too fast. The narrator is absolutely exceptional! He personifies Strike and does an excellent job with all the characters and accents. Planning my trip to London and Cornwall now!

Waaaaaayyyy too long
Revisado: 12-17-18
There's a nugget of a story here that could have been good. Was there an editor involved in this process? Because it sure doesn't seem like it. Internal monologues go on and on, story lines drag on until I just didn't care anymore. Plus the three main characters are so whiny and selfish it's near impossible to care one way or another what happens to them. I listened to the end just to see if there was a really interesting twist or point I was missing. Alas, there wasn't.

Good story but two terrible narrators
Revisado: 02-07-17
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
I'm enjoying the book but am writing my first review based on two terrible narrators. I'm losing count of the number of words Caitlin Thornburn has mispronounced--as another reviewer noted, what theater geek in Minnesota wouldn't know how to pronounce Guthrie? Cholera, LaGuardia, Gustafson (a common surname in the Upper Midwest)--all mispronounced and took me out of the story. Then she gives employees at the Minneapolis airport Southern accents. What? Is anyone paying attention? John Moraitis sounds like he belongs in Brooklyn not Minnesota, and pauses in weird places. Why no attempt at Minnesota accents? Very disappointed in the narration of this book (although Jeff Harding is good).
