Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Story nearly identical to mini-series
Revisado: 04-26-24
Many times I've compared a book to a screen adaptation, and there are usually differences.
In this case the television version is almost identical scene for scene, line for line. Two exceptions:
- The book includes a bit more introspection and internal monologue, particularly during chess games.
- Parts of Beth's backstory, particularly as regards her mother, were embellished for the TV series.
I enjoyed the audiobook. The narration is spot on, and lends a charming character to the story.

Historia
A caustic criticism of nearly every philosophic predecessor and a challenge of traditionally held views on right and wrong, Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil paved the way for modern philosophical thought. Through nearly three hundred transformative aphorisms, Nietzsche presents a worldview in which neither truth nor morality are absolutes, and where good and evil are not opposites but counterparts that stem from the same desires.

Nietzsche must be Shaking in his Grave
- De Pierre Boursiquot en 11-13-18
Optional
Revisado: 08-14-22
Many wise words; much to inspire thought and reflection. Some things would have been controversial at the time, more and others today. Nietzsche never intended to pander, and it takes courage and maturity to listen to what he has to say. The existentialists in general predicted the course of modern civilization surprisingly well. When you are tempted to feel superior and dismissive of Nietzsche, beware that you are using the same compassionate lens on your own ideas. He did.
