Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Such a sweet story.

I loved this story. It took a little while to get the hang of the flashbacks in the beginning, but after that, I couldn’t put it down.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Terrible character.
Revisado: 10-13-24
I read the reviews of this book and I expected better. At one point I looked down and I had four hours left and I considered quitting, but I kept thinking it just has to get better. It did not. The main character is never satisfied, a total whiner, and pretty much insufferable. I really didn’t find many redeeming qualities. In fact, the character development was so weak that I just didn’t give a crap about any of them. The narrator was OK, may be a bit monotone for me, but it was actually fine. In retrospect, I should’ve returned the book when I first started listening, but I didn’t.

Meh.
Revisado: 04-06-24
I found the topic fascinating but it was peppered by so much “romance novel” BS I lost interest. Maybe it was the narration. I don’t know. But parts of this book were excellent. It’s important. I just felt that the love stories within it cheapened the entirety of the book. It was cliche and predictable. I made it through, but would not read again, and would only recommend to someone interested in romance novels.

Historia
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

I look forward to this every week
Revisado: 03-29-21
Michael Cohen is doing a great job with this. His speech patterns are odd, and you can tell when he's reading something because some of the inflections are in the wrong place. I've read that some people don't like the F word being tossed around, but I disagree. I think he's a very authentic person, and this is just who he is. It's part of his vernacular, so keep it in there. These guys he's talking about speak that way so.... I find him to be humble and honest. I believe the stuff he says, as unbelievable as it is. In the beginning I didn't like the things he added, like the segments from The Sopranos, or other music. But that seems to have toned down some and become more relevant. It's a serious topic and, while I find myself laughing out loud most weeks, I find those segments to mostly be a distraction. One comment about the 3/26/21 episode - Jennifer Weisselberg was so hard to listen to. She had trouble completing sentences, and staying on topic. It seems like maybe she was drunk or something. Michael did a good job of trying to keep her on track, but it took me 3 listening sessions to get through that one! But I hope he keeps this going. More people should listen!

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

1/2 finished and not sure I can make it
Revisado: 06-29-20
I had a feeling I might not like John Bolton after I read his book, but I have underestimated that. I’m only half finished and I just don’t know if I can withstand much more. This guy really thinks everyone else is stupid. I understand he has extensive governmental experience, and all I can think is that might be why things are always such a mess. He’s wholly arrogant, especially toward women. It’s so bad I’m starting to laugh out loud at the things he says. I’m not a democrat, so my opinion isn’t political. But what an insufferable person! I will do my best to continue to listen. My intent was to learn something, but I’m finding it difficult to get past his pompousness. Ugh. It’s sad because if he had toned it down just a bit, I might have taken it more seriously. Humble is good, Mr. Bolton, especially when you are right.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

Insufferable
Revisado: 06-27-17
When I read the description it sounded interesting. Oceans / boats / sailing / scary islands... Instead it felt like I was the one who was suffering the most. None of the characters were interesting. There was not enough development of them to differentiate between them, or to become engaged at all. I just don't think I can even finish the book I'm 3/4 through and I don't care what happens to any of these people.

Historia
Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea in the first volume of The Dark Tower series. Roland, the last gunslinger, is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange single-mindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape of good and evil.
