Historia
We have all pondered seemingly unanswerably but significant questions about our existence - the biggest of all being, "Why are we here?" Philosophy has developed over millennia to help us grapple with these essential intangibles. There is no better way to study the big questions in philosophy than to compare how the world's greatest minds have analyzed these questions, defined the terms, and then reasoned out potential solutions. Once you've compared the arguments, the final step is always deciding for yourself whether you find an explanation convincing.

An Incredibly amazing course
Revisado: 06-16-23
This course by Professor. David K. Johnson is absolutely amazing!!!!!! He not only gives you the argument and the counter argument exploring both in depth. But he also gives you the mechanisms and the tools by which we as human beings should go about exploring and discovering reality.
I think people who disagree with his conclusions miss the point of this course; It’s not for him to convince you if god does or does not exist it’s for you the listener to learn the logical ways you can go about exploring this question.

By understanding the dramatic story of the Ottoman Empire - from its early years as a collection of raiders and conquerors to its undeniable power in the 15th and 16th centuries to its catastrophic collapse in the wreckage of the First World War - one can better grasp the current complexities of the Middle East. Befitting a story of such epic scope and grandeur, every lecture is a treasure trove of historical insights into the people, events, themes, and locales responsible for shaping the story of this often-overlooked empire.

I HATE PROFESSOR KENNETH W.HARL
Revisado: 06-12-17
ok here is the thing I fucking love history and I don't mean to be disrespectful to Professor Kenneth W.Harl but i need to tell you this I've listened to almost all of his courses here on the great courses including but not limited to his course on Alexander the Great , his course on the Peloponnesian War and a couple more courses and let me tell you this I FREAKING HATE HIM I hate his organization which is all over the place I hate the way he talks I hate the way he sounds I hate the stupid way he says aaaaaand every couple of minutes I hate that he assumes always that you know geographical areas instead of explaining I hate that he doesn't summarize a topic in the end I hate that he doesn't emphasize great events and their consequences and I really really hate that he gets all the amazing topics I'm really interested in. By far by far the worst worst professor on the great courses you could learn a couple of things from his courses here and there but you will not finish the course feeling like you got a comprehensive knowledge about the era his course is talking about. I'm sorry professor maybe you're a great researches or something els but you sir in my opinion are not a good teacher and should stop teaching. Or at least please don't take all the good courses let somebody els teach them.

Historia
A belief in free will touches nearly everything that human beings value. It is difficult to think about law, politics, religion, public policy, intimate relationships, morality—as well as feelings of remorse or personal achievement—without first imagining that every person is the true source of his or her thoughts and actions. And yet the facts tell us that free will is an illusion.

If you are scientifically minded and had any doubt that free will is an illusion I think this book will definitely end the argument for you and make it a fact we don't have free will

Interesting history that not a lot of people know about
Revisado: 01-21-16
I liked that I finally understand how China became what it is today and how its political system works I also loved his story telling ability
I disliked that the names were really confusing and for somebody like me who already has issues remembering American names I was really lost sometimes when he wouldn't repeat the name more than once and just assume you know who he's taking about and also I thought he was gonna go into detail about old China history he didn't he just explains modern China history which is still fascinating of course
Over all awesome course I loved the teacher his opinions were very helpful very important part of the world you need to understand to have a full picture of how humanity got to where we are today in term of political ideologies

Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

Amazing story with deep explanations
Revisado: 01-21-16
I liked that he went into details to understand as best we can what happened exactly and why and I loved that he represents every side of a specific argument
Like was the war about slavery or not ? and so on
I disliked that it got some what boring in a couple of lectures when he went into too much details and I also disliked that he doesn't repeat him self more than once sometimes which is a problem if your learning these names for the first time
Overall an important and fascinating peace of history I loved it you won't be disappointed if you love history and want to understand how we got where we are today

Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Good but for people who don't want a lot of depth
Revisado: 11-07-15
I liked that he gives you the big picture of history but if you're like me and you like great depth in each topic you should download the great history courses for each of those individual topics although this is still pretty good for people who want a little bit of everything and don't have the time to do what I mentions before and one last note he doesn't spend that much time talking about the classical period

Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

It's amazing
Revisado: 05-22-15
I loved this book so much it gives a very clear look at a young Einstein who wasn't afraid to go against every other scientist at the time and to think freely and independently and then it gives you a look at an older Einstein who was the exact opposite of his younger self where he had a set of believes that he was trying to prove right instead of just going where ever his physics take him like when he was younger it's an amazing book Walter Isaacson did a great job overall explaining all aspect of Einsteins life but in some of the science explanations it was hard to follow some of what he's was trying to explain maybe it's because I'm not a 100% native English speaker
But nonetheless this is an amazing biography and I would recommend anybody who's trying to make a change in the world to read it

What were the forces that led to one of history's most protracted and legendary periods of conflict? How did they affect the three great civilizations that participated in them? And, ultimately, why did they end and what did they accomplish? In these 36 lectures, you'll look at the "big picture" of the Crusades as an ongoing period of conflict involving Western Christendom (we would now call it Western Europe), the Byzantine Empire, and the Muslim world.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.
