I must be stupid

Third book in the series and I am left still wondering what the solution to the mystery is. You know, that thing that happened at the very beginning of the first book? The thing that started it all? Did Zoya’s grandmother set that up too? Why and what was the plan? I enjoyed all three books but sometimes along the way some things just never got resolved in my (slow witted) mind but the really big question was just dropped like a hot potato. Or— will it somehow come up in the next series??

Good, fast moving tale

It gets a bit confusing at points though. I’m not always sure I’ve gotten the through line. But isn’t that how life works? :D

I’m loosing enthusiasm for short stories like these because I barely get into them before they end. If they have a zinger to the ending it can be fun but some just fall a bit flat. Mixed bag, as you might expect.

Brutal

I’m a fan of the author but I can’t say I liked this book. Probably all too close to reality, meaning I believe these things happen — after all a Serbian started WW one. The book moves quickly through the horror, thankfully. Can people really have any kind of “happy end” after horrors lived through like these? No. It’s deeply disturbing and emotionally ruinous.

Hopeful but…

Still leaves a lot hanging. We know this leads to Kragden-ah, but how? Civilization seems destined to return but we know it won’t be anything like before and yet we’ll find traces of Altor millennia down the road. Interesting.

Rollicking good fun!

Yet another great addition to the St Mary’s series. Not to be missed! Nice to get the back story on these two major characters, particularly Pennyroyal— one of my favorites. And no worries about them retiring just yet either.

Very bleak

Too much like reality. It doesn’t entertain or distract from the shit show going on in the world right now. And I suppose that’s the point. But it’s too much. Yes I’ll buy the next volume and read it, so the author must be doing something right, eh? And we know from the Kragdon-Ah series where this is all headed. Still, it’s depressing and uncomfortable, particularly given the level of detail written. Sorry, dear author, this is not a series I’m enjoying.

Scary

Too close to reality! I’m sitting in Southern California as Pacific Palisades and Altadena are burning and conspiracy theories are rampant. This is absolutely the worst story to be reading right now! It’s a good story but painful to read as thousands of people are homeless and scrambling for shelter. It has left me a bit shaken but I will pick up the next volume and continue though I really hope it will get more positive.

A bit slow

As SK stories go this was, for me, a bit underwhelming. Slow paced and a bit anticlimactic but even at that I’m not sorry to have read it. The cast of voices worked well and at least there was some closure to the missing people. Maybe I’ll enjoy it more on a second pass through it.
