Historia
In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside. To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol. Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

Clever and twisting story
Revisado: 04-19-25
I really enjoyed this tale. The characters don't always make the best decisions, but they make sense for their portrayals. Ana and Din make excellent partners, and Din has become more confident in his role as investigator. His attempts to ride herd on his superior were amusing. I think the narrator was also very good and added to the story.

So much fun
Revisado: 02-08-21
This story is a continuation of the first four novellas in the Murderbot Diaries, so you can't start here, or it probably won't make much sense. However, the whole storyline is great fun, so skipping the first four would mean missing out on a lot of a sarcastic, awkward, clever, and reluctantly heroic SecUnit saving its various humans from all the disasters they insist on embroiling themselves in, between watching lots of media.
Having a male narrator for a determinedly gender-neutral protagonist is a bit odd, and Murderbot should be even more sarcastic, but the performance grew on me. I will definitely be getting the next episode, er, book.

Historia
Helicopter pilot Sara Denning joins an all-male navy battle group with little fanfare - and that's just the way she likes it. Her philosophy is simple - blend in, be competent, and above all, never do anything to stand out as a woman. But somewhere along the way, she lost herself - her feminine, easy-going soul now buried under so many defensive layers, she can't reach it anymore.

Heroine is an idiot
Revisado: 11-15-19
While the performance was adequate, this story was exasperating. The heroine was socially incompetent, tended to blank out at inopportune moments, unduly modest about her own competency (we're assured she is an awesome pilot, despite her tendency to panic, to zone out, and profound fear of water which is detrimental in a naval pilot), unobservant, not very bright, and hesitant about actually engaging in combat while in the midst of a combat situation. She was also a poor friend. I was thoroughly irritated at her and her attitude. The male lead was unethical, untrustworthy, and granted power and authority that made no sense. In fact, most of the story made little sense. I'm avoiding this author in the future.

Historia
England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage. Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 11-01-19
Very enjoyable and clever story. It is set in a time period I don't often see, and takes advantage of the state of technology of the time, which was a nice touch. Few of the characters are what they seem; even straightforward Curtis is deceived about himself. The narrator does an admiral job with the material, too. I will look for more stories by author and narrator, both.

Early work, but entertaining
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a revised version of the author's first book. As such, it's a bit rough in places, but I enjoyed it. It's about a shape-shifting mercenary and spy who is not-so-great at sword work, who rescues a wolf that is more than he seems. There's also the standard evil wizard who wants to take over the world, a dispossessed king, a dragon, walking corpses (not zombies), and mysterious artifacts. Good fun, and Aralorn, our heroine, is worth cheering for.

Very cute story
Revisado: 04-28-18
This book took an interesting look at class, culture, the importance of bring true to one's self, family dynamics, and friendship. It was also really cute without being saccharine. The narrators were a good fit, too.

Just okay
Revisado: 07-11-17
Interesting premise, but the villains were too conveniently situated, and too many people were keeping secrets for bad reasons. The narrator was fine.
