Historia
Meet Daniel Sullivan, a man with a complicated life. A New Yorker living in the wilds of Ireland, he has children he never sees in California; a father he loathes in Brooklyn; and a wife, Claudette, who is a reclusive ex-film star given to shooting at anyone who ventures up their driveway. He is also about to find out something about a woman he lost touch with 20 years ago, and this discovery will send him off course, far away from wife and home. Will his love for Claudette be enough to bring him back?

Mediocre
Revisado: 01-13-25
The narrator of Daniel had an extremely annoying voice. Hard to imagine a glamorous movie star falling for that. On the other hand, she wasn’t very interesting herself.
Also, the male narrator mispronouncing things, and toward the end, Neil became Nile. Sloppy.

Historia
Home, for Noah York, is Oakland, New Hampshire, the sleepy little town where Noah's mother, Virginia, had a psychotic breakdown and Noah got beaten to a pulp as a teenager. Then there were the good times—and Noah's not sure which ones are more painful to recall. Now thirty-seven and eking out a living as an artist in Providence, Rhode Island, Noah looks much the same—and swears just as colorfully—as he did in high school.

An unlikable character
Revisado: 10-30-24
Noah isn’t likable. That’s not necessarily a bad thing for a main character, but I really thought the sarcasm and snarky dialogue were overdone. Also I found the prose relied heavily on similes, some good, but mostly not so. The conversations Noah had with J. D. were downright unbelievable—no one can communicate this way. It was far too cutesy and trying too hard. This could have been accentuated by the annoying narrator. He made Noah even more unsympathetic, in my opinion.
I remember disliking Mr. Yates’ other books, but thought I would give him another chance. This was the last one for me.

Historia
Out in the desert in a place called the Palace, a young man tends to a dying soul, someone he once knew briefly, but who has haunted the edges of his life. Juan Gay—playful raconteur, child lost and found and lost, guardian of the institutionalized—has a project to pass along. It is inspired by a true artifact of a book, Sex Variants: A Study in Homosexual Patterns, which contains stories collected in the early twentieth century from queer subjects by a queer researcher, Jan Gay, whose groundbreaking work was then co-opted by a committee, her name buried.

Disappointed
Revisado: 09-16-24
I don’t get the hype about this book. I tried to like it and finished it. But I really disliked the structure and technique of this writing. I didn’t care for the narration either.

Good story
Revisado: 10-19-23
While everyone wasn’t likable in this novel, you learned to appreciate their flaws. Some themes and terms were overused, but otherwise I enjoyed this audio book.

Historia
Saying that Benjamin Sean Quinn had "anger issues" was an understatement. For those who knew him for the shortest amount of time, his life was in order: He was physically fit, had a great job which provided him a house in the suburbs and the material things he desired, a loving, monogamous relationship, two happy, healthy daughters and an established circle of friends. In all accounts, his life seemed perfect. But to those who knew him the longest, they knew he was an idle grenade, waiting for someone to pull the pin.

Revisado: 08-02-23
Not only was Benjamin a terribly unsympathetic character, the narrator’s voice and tone were unbearably smarmy. Just awful. Glad I didn’t pay for it.

Could have been better
Revisado: 06-22-23
Several passages were repetitious and could have been whittled down. It seemed odd to me that Crissy had no friends and where the guests came from for such a big wedding remains a mystery.

Too long
Revisado: 06-06-23
This needed a better editing. Far too long.
The quavering voice used by the narrator at times made me cringe.
Some things were simply implausible. It’s not a bad story, though.

Frustrating
Revisado: 01-11-23
In my opinion, the ending was hasty and not terribly fulfilling. Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and think that the author has a great gift for constructing beautiful and witty prose. I’ve read all of Mr Greer’s books and have never been disappointed.
