Historia
In war, there is no second place. To ensure victory, planetary governments employ private armies to help fight their battles. And the Berserkers are the best. As the galaxy's preeminent mercenary force, they are hired by governments and corporations to do jobs that are too tough, too messy, or too deadly for their own forces. Expertly trained and equipped with the most advanced weaponry, they are willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill a contract - if the price is right.

Updated version of Hammer's Slammers
Revisado: 04-06-25
Updated version of David Drakes epic Hammer's Slammers with more techy weapons tech. Still hover tanks, plasma weapons, etc. Lots of gut wrenching, heart pounding combat that is generally well done. A relief column fighting through an enemy to relieve a surrounded enemy is not new but it is is well done here. The narrator does a good job with the frantic action. The MC is similar to one of Drakes main characters. My biggest gripe is the sub plot with the local arrogant Colonel. Just felt awkward and forced given the story, especially the "duels.". Also, while the tech was definitely advanced from today, it didn't seem advanced enough for a space faring human race. Just my opinion.....

Same stuff different book..
Revisado: 01-08-25
Really liked this series when the MC was an underdog defending himself, friends and planet. Now he's your typical OP millennial. None of his decisions have consequences and he has his God to back stop all his bad decisions. To be honest I zoned out on all the skill upgrade details. The only interestingcharacter (worthyof his own book) us the Sword Saint ...done with the series...

Historia
Once, Jackson Rook was a war hero. Raised from boyhood to pilot an exosuit mech, he’d fought gallantly for the rebellion against the Collectivists. But that was a long time ago, on a world very far away. Now, Jackson Rook is a criminal, a smuggler on board the Multipurpose Supply Vehicle Tar Heel. His latest mission: steal a top-of-the-line mech called the Citadel and deliver it to the far-flung planet Swindle, a world so hostile even the air will kill you. The client: a man known only as the Warlord.

Descent but predictable, not Larry's best....
Revisado: 02-14-24
Larry writes good fiction and I've loved his stuff. This is OK, not his best effort though. As always, Oliver Wyman is superb. With Science Fiction its always weird to see some problems with tech and then ignore others so the characters have some problems to solve themselves. That happens a lot in this book. For example (mild spoiler alert) there are powerful attack drones in space but they aren't used on the planet surface to protect the harvesters? Also there is the "Dune" like sub plot of a "magical" chemical needed for interstellar travel that has to be harvested on a planet run by a ruthless dictator. Those harvesting the chemical are under constant attack from huge, dangerous local wild life, though there are local freedom fighters that live in wild....sounds familiar....? The MC suffers so much trauma before the story and during but it never changes his happy wise cracking personality. The supporting characters never need rest or sleep despite constant danger and combat....

OK story but couldn't get past the narrator's voice. MC sounded like count Dracula with an occasional Scottish accent. Supporting characters sounded like kids cartoon characters. Too bad, the story was fun LitRPG....

It began as just another evening of fantasy gaming with James, Karl, Andrea, and the rest ready to assume their various roles as wizard, cleric, warrior, or thief. But sorcerous gamemaster Professor Deighton had something else planned for this unsuspecting group of college students. And the "game" soon became a matter of life and death as the seven adventurers found themselves transported to an alternate world and into the bodies of the actual characters they had been pretending to be....

Want unlikeable characters? Then this is for you. College students who have no clue and stay that way despite life or death situations. Kept waiting for the characters to develop, instead they became even more unlikeable. Was almost hoping more would be offed by the author. Solid narration couldn't make me keep listening....

Swords. Sorcery. Dick Jokes. Truly do the gods smile upon you, dear listener, for the first four books in the hilarious Caverns and Creatures series are now available in one audiobook set. Join Tim, Dave, Julian, and Cooper as they are thrown into a hostile fantasy world filled with magic and monsters, and ruled over by a cruel and sadistic game master who taunts and harasses them while he sits back and eats their fried chicken.

Couldn't finish the series
Revisado: 04-21-22
Bought the 4 book series and couldn't make it through book 2. There is a point where more bodily function jokes/gags/tropes are just not funny anymore unless you're in middle school. None of the characters "grow" at all and are as whinny as they were page one. The "leveling up" is random and, though living in a game world, the characters do none of the traditional "grinding" instead just bumble around from one situation to another. The narrator has a high pitched voice and narrow range of voices to and tends to make all characters should whinny by elongating words during tense scenes. Overall a disappointing series despite other positive reviews

Love the Iron realms universe. Wish there were more audio books that explored these characters further! The narration was solid though you would think that all the characters were from Great Britain or its former colonies...

Interesting take on LitRPG but dull characters
Revisado: 01-04-22
Interesting take on LitRPG world with lots of action. Really 2 books in one with first part a solo adventure with just the MC grinding and questing and 2nd part the MC is part of a community. My biggest complaint is the wooden characters, especially the MC. No depth of personality, no self analysis, no overcoming the huge shift in realities he's thrust into. MC is basically a killing machine with not much personality. Some exploration of other characters in the second part but never in any detail. Writing also lacks style and flair. In the middle of battle the MC and his demon "friend?" seem non stressed as they go about killing things. The narrator is OK, would have liked to see him inject some emotion into fight scenes....

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. What a wonderful story, superbly performed. Riveting, engaging, heartwarming and harrowing all in one. If you read "The Martian" you'll quickly pick up the similarities in writing style. Ray Porter is simply the best narrator out there. Do your self a favor and get this book...
