I was a huge fan of Double Eagle, which is one of Abnett’s best novels. Not only does INTERCEPTOR CITY match it, it might actually be even better. It was a long wait for the sequel and Abnett programmed that into the book’s timeline. It’s 17 years since Jagdea has been in the air, and a lot has changed. She’s no longer a hot stick, and feels well past her prime. But this book throws her into an adventure that’s, if anything, more tense and gripping than Double Eagle. Not only does the book have great Abnett characterization, but there’s a verisimilitude in how he writes aircraft (focusing on preflight checks, etc.) that adds to the sense of threat. Add in a great performance by Toby Longworth—who should just be classed as a full company of actors at this point—and you get one 4-A listen.

I was a big fan of the previous Simlex/Shard novel OUTGUNNED, and if anything this one is better. Following on from the events of the previous novel, it ramps up the political intrigue and mystery, because this is if anything a mystery novel. Twists come layered and fast, and quite properly for a book about propagandists nothing is quite what it seems. The characterization and dialogue are razor sharp as always from Flowers and his observations on the Imperium and the way it twists people are insightful, harrowing and humane. It’s a psychologically complex book that still moves like a thriller, with a greater sense of tension than Outgunned. Similarly the narrator does a fantastic job with the cast, making sure the jokes land and the subtlety of interactions comes through. Just really, really great.

What happens when you take two of the most brilliantly pompous characters of Warhammer 40,000 and pit them against each other? A huge amount of enjoyment, of course. Cawl and Bile make great antagonists for one another and on top of that the book feels tightly plotted with the potential stakes enormous. Beautifully (and comically) narrated and well-written, this one is a can’t miss.

Fun, twisty tale of infiltration, double-dealing, secrets, lies and plots. Really enjoyable, with an excellent narrative voice that keeps up the mystery and sprinkles in a sardonic commentary that ties together a story with a variety of perspectives. Highly recommended.

Stalingrad by way of the 41st millennium, what begins as a cat-and-mouse game between two snipers takes a fascinating turn into a study of identity, propaganda, and ideology. Rob Young does a fantastic job of characterizing the Cadians as well as the Tau, two cultures whose ideology is deeply rooted in service and sacrifice for the collective good. Fast, smart, and pacy with a great sense of atmosphere in the characterization of a ruined industrial cityscape.

What makes Cesare’s Clown series so fantastic is how it weaves in the most troubling aspects of our current moment—from online conspiracy theories, to moral panics, to reactionary religious and political movements. That veracity helps the big, theatrical aspects of the series feel more grounded while indulging in the visual spectacle of horror and action films. These are books with fantastic characters, thrilling twists and carefully-constructed scenes, all crafted to maximize impact. They’re particularly good in audio format, as the narrator not only evokes a wide range of characters with ease but invests them with a sense of edgy tension.

Rollicking tour through Ork factions and some pompous Imperials thrown in. Fun writing style with a narrator who really gets the assignment.

Excellent story and performance. Every scene hits, and Reid’s training as a doctor is on full display in gritty (but never excessive) body horror. Tense and twisty with plenty of surprises.

Crowley’s books always contain fantastic character work, excellent jokes and surprising depth—but while I could say this one is no different, that would be underselling it. His look into Ork culture (kultur?) is both hilarious and insightful, and contains multiple levels of meaning while still keeping the story moving. Just excellent fun and an excellent read. Narration is also top-notch.
