Refreshingly an Author who loves her topic
Revisado: 04-22-21
It was delightful, the reader's voice was absolutely soothing, lyrical, and engaging. The author clearly respects and things highly of Alexander. She's almost defensive about other authors denigrating or dismissing him. I read many critical historical pieces, that tear down historical figures in attempt to be relevant and objective. but sometimes it's good to remember why great historical figures were considered great, why the people who followed them genuinely loved them. About half the book it seems is an appendix of sort, but it's a delightful walk through the classical works related to Alexander.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

A book that ties meaning and suffering
Revisado: 02-28-21
if you appreciate the questions that Nietzsche, Jordan Peterson raise, or psychotherapy in general, this is a complementary work. clearly written, spoken, and satisfyingly conversational with a smooth narrative in the first half of the book. I never heard of logotherapy, so there's a bonus that I now have heard of it from the person who created it.

Historia
Five years ago, the US Space Force became a reality. And while those writing the checks took things very seriously, the other military branches did not. As a result, Space Force was populated by undesirables. My name is Captain Ethan Stone, a decorated member of SEAL Team Six turned Space Force "recruit". Flash forward five years and between tenses. President West is in office. Power has shifted. And Space Force is defunded. With just a handful of us still living on base, we find ourselves being evicted. But before all of us can leave, aliens invade.

Historia
Malcolm Muggeridge contends that Christendom is quite different from Christianity. Christ said, "My kingdom is very much a part of this world, and thus subject to decay and eventual ruin." In this book, Muggeridge explores the prevailing downfall of Christendom. However, contrary to our natural impulse to mourn this, Muggeridge makes a cogent and convincing argument that now is a time to rejoice.

Short and insightful.
Revisado: 01-02-21
If the past is a foreign country then it's good look for the wisest voices. Malcolm Muggeridge lived through so much of history and saw it first hand it's hard to believe he's left so much wisdom, humor and wit hidden and unknown to so many people. Some relevancy, some dated ideas (evolution was suspect to him) but always a pleasant companion.

Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Historia
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

Connects the gap from Civil War to Modernity
Revisado: 08-08-20
Really enjoyed the critical yet sympathetic tone Chernow takes. He captures an aspect of these Uber wealthy folks and how religious faith kept him grounded but blinded him to the mercy needed as well as judgement. I don't read much between The civil war in world war I, so this book fills in a lot of gaps of how America changed.

Delightful tone, rich sources
Revisado: 04-27-20
Mary Beard is a rare blend of intelligence and humility. She rightfully steers her reader away from the common take on history that we must study it as if we are in the Roman context still. her knowledge is unmistakable, she wonderfully cite sources in a smooth way but doesn't interrupt the narrative. she doesn't condescend to the reader by ignoring Latin, but instead embraces maybe a dozen phrases that help the reader gain and appreciation for the sentiment behind the words. I myself heard about her from the podcaster Mike Duncan. and if you love the history of Rome podcast, you'll probably enjoy this book.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?
