Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

A disappointing entry in the Inspector Gamache series
Revisado: 11-07-24
I am very disappointed in this book. I am a fan of the earlier Gamache books, and the book Penny co-wrote with Hillary Clinton, but this book was not great. The plot was poorly constructed and the story a bit choppy. Fiction should be at least somewhat believable, but this was not. The plot was overly complicated and implausible; does the Surete de Quebec really allow its officers to jet all over without any oversight? Also, it was clear that Gamache had the conspiracy wrong from very early in the story, making it excruciating to read his missteps and false conclusions. I prefer audio books that have a narrator who provides different voices for the characters; this new narrator merely read the book to us, although he got the accents right.

Pineapples don’t grow on trees
Revisado: 02-12-22
Utterly preposterous storyline. I can’t recommend this one. Pineapples do not grow on trees, although they do on this island near Florida.
Excellent voice actor.

After shooting crime scene photos of a famous actress, the latest victim of the murderer the press has dubbed the “Dagger Killer,” Vivian notices eerie similarities to the crime scenes of previous victims details that put Vivian at the top of the killer’s target list.

I found the story to be a bit silly and the plot unbelievable even for fiction. There were some astounding inconsistencies in terms of the setting in time.

I made it to chapter 3, but as soon as I heard the voice actor speak in Portia’s voice, I had to quit listening. I read the first book in the series in print, and will read this book in print also. I hope a different actor reads the remaining books in the series.

The story was well plotted and the characters well developed. Far-fetched? Maybe, but maybe not. Reminded me of Baldacci’s stories a bit. The narrator was good although it grated on my ear every time he pronounced Camano wrong—but this mispronunciation of place names that are local to me is usual. It just seems like the narrators would try to get little things like this right.

Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard sweater-vest; waters his fern, Frederica; and heads out to his garden. But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before.

Any wedding is a big deal in the small village of Kilbane - even more so when the bride is a famous fashion model. It's also good for business; Siobhan O'Sullivan's bistro will be catering the three-day affair. When the drunken best man is disinvited, Siobhan's own beau, Macdara, gladly steps in. But finding the original best man murdered in the woods casts a pall over the nuptials. And when a second member of the wedding party is poisoned, Macdara goes from being best man to prime suspect.

Historia
Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.
