Good take on a classic
Revisado: 04-03-25
I like how the protagonist is written. A writer has to balance flaws and charm and this definitely hits it because there were times I was frustrated with Lissie and other times I found her adorable. The plot was an actual plot not one that is based on miscommunication or struggle of feelings. Overall, I enjoyed this one!
The only thing I found odd was the character Charles Bingley. because P&P and all the characters except Charles is mentioned. Oh! that reminds me that there wasn't a full resolve with the secondary romance but it wasnt as front and center anyway. Read/listen!

Great story, fair translation, bad narration
Revisado: 01-23-25
Regarding the story, it's great. It's a "page-turner" that I went back and forth listening and reading. It's thoroughly enjoyable. The translation is pretty good. It's more simplified than other versions.
Now, onto the narration. It was not good for this book. The narrator is engaging and can do a good amount of varied voices. The problem is that the accents are horrendous. He used all kinds of accents liberally. British, and absolutely horrendous French and Italian. It was just so bad that it's grating on the ear. The Italian sounded like he was trying to be Dracula. for such a long audiobook, choose your narrator wisely. Listen to the previews.

Not as romantic without context
Revisado: 04-16-24
I think this only worked because the FMC was immediately attracted to the MMC and vice versa. I think their initial meet was good but then the counter reactions were quite subdued. I couldn't put my finger in what I was feeling until I read another review talking about references to another story and then I got it. I felt like I was in the middle of a conversation. I was as confused as the FMC seemed to be. in any other circumstance, this would have been creepy. The FMC made it clear several times she did not want anything more but everyone ignored her. They talked about marriage and destiny and I was getting annoyed because the FMC was not into it yet was attracted to the MMC. Don't make the character protest that much then. That was uncomfortable to hear. However, I guess it is in the context of this storyline and readers having prior knowledge of the characters.
I gave it a higher rating because I like the actors. it was still a breezy listen but definitely had a bit of a creepy factor to it. kind of like how Sleepless in Seattle is actually kind of creepy.

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

great story and superb acting
Revisado: 04-12-24
Abby Jimenez gives a lot of depth to a romance. The romance was my favorite style. Innocent and slow burning. I love easter eggs too, if you read her other books, you'll see it. Zachary Webber is one of my favorite male readers. I always look forward to stories he narrates. He has a likable charm and Christine Lakin is just a favorite actress of mine and was pleasantly surprised to hear her voice. Finally, what sealed it was the ending with questions that Abby answers.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Historia
If Bao Nguyen had to describe himself, he’d say he was a rock. Steady and strong, but not particularly interesting. His grades are average, his social status unremarkable. He works at his parents’ pho restaurant, and even there, he is his parents’ fifth favorite employee. Not ideal. If Linh Mai had to describe herself, she’d say she was a firecracker. The only problem? Her parents rely on her in ways they’re not willing to admit, including working practically full-time at her family’s pho restaurant.

I can finally relate!
Revisado: 02-09-22
This story is so grounded in the reality of the Vietnamese families in Bolsa. The characters could have easily been a relative. i appreciate the Vietnamese dialogue as well.
as for the story, it was believable. i wouldn't call it a comedy. i think it's more on the serious side with some light hearted banter. Also, I am so going to eat banh xeo now. yum!
