Really well done

The audiobook is so well done. The narrator pronounces French words correctly, and I think that makes the story so much more real and romantic. I enjoyed this story— descriptions of food and fashion and France, what’s not to like!

How much better it could have been if the dialogue was more robust

This had all the potential to be a great book, but there were too many descriptions of emotion and actions and not enough dialogue, the classic writer approach to “show vs tell” the audience. The climax moments could have been so much more suspenseful than they were. Maybe it’s the makings of a great movie, and whoever writes the screenplay could have the dialogue improved. Lastly, the audiobook narrator was mediocre at best, lack of pitch range and poor pronunciation of the Italian and French names, those details make such a difference to the listener.

There are many interesting and horrifying parts of this book, certainly brings the ugliness of social media and image to the forefront, but as a cohesive story, I felt the ending didn’t bring it all together. Something felt missing.

My favorite book of 2022

This was absolutely stellar. Beautifully written, a story of identity, family, and belonging. A story that opens up the south like I haven’t read before. I hope Casey gets all of the accolades she deserves. I laughed, cried, questioned, and thought all throughout this book.
