Interesting tale but narration could be better
Revisado: 01-21-24
Really good book. Well-paced allegory told in a unique way. Interesting characters. The world-building is good and the characters are likable.
I enjoyed the main narration, but I really, really don’t like the way Max is read. I like the actors tone, but had this been directed differently, it would have been enjoyable.
Between the deep breaths between each sentence and the exact same cadence for every sentence - narration, dialogue, sex, or action… happy, angry, or sad - every line is read the exact same way. There’s an upturn at the end of each line that sounds juvenile. The intimate scenes definitely would have been better had they been acted by the other narrator. As a result, I started tuning these chapters out to the on to the point that I wanted to skip those chapters towards the end of the book since I wasn’t hearing it anyway. I don’t feel these chapters were story crucial so I didn’t seem to miss much.

Revisado: 12-07-23
Well-written with good world building. I was pulled in to the emotional journey and even shed an unexpected tear. Narration was much better than it was in the first book too. I’m looking forward to book 3!

Historia
Keera is a killer. As the King’s Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the king’s favored assassin. When a mysterious figure moves against the Crown, Keera is called upon to hunt down the so-called Shadow. She tracks her target into the magical lands of the Fae, but Faeland is not what it seems—and neither is the Shadow. Keera is shocked by what she learns and can’t help but wonder who her enemy truly is: the King that destroyed her people or the Shadow that threatens the peace.

Overall a good story, but narration could be better
Revisado: 12-05-23
Good story. Well paced and it kept my interest throughout. The main critique I have is the narration. While I really like the tone of the narrator’s voice, there’s no distinction from one scene to the next. Action, intimacy, tension, are all read exactly the same, as standard narration or dialogue. This made for a mundane listen. Were it not for the good story, I likely would have not finished the book.

Historia
For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently - and far less seriously - than its male counterpart. That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them.

A Must Read for Every Woman
Revisado: 04-06-22
An easy-to-understand read that address a in-depth topic with structure, empathy, and humor. Excellent writing delivered by the narrator herself with the skill of a seasoned voice actor.
There’s so much society has been led to believe women’s sexuality. From not properly educating about something as simple as the proper names of our parts to our mind-body connection response to arousal, to what an orgasm really is and what’s needed for it **SMH**… is much misinformation that’s also damaging.
Every woman should read this book… as should every man who actually wants to understand how to more deeply connect with sexual partners who are women and improve the depth and quality of their relationships and sex lives.

Historia
Before Elloren Gardner came to possess the White Wand of myth, the Wand was drawn to another bearer: Sagellyn Gaffney. Sage’s affinity for light magery, a rare skill among Gardnerians, makes her the perfect protector for the one tool that can combat the shadows spreading across Erthia. But in order to keep the Wand safe from the dark forces hunting for it, Sage must abandon everything she once knew and forge a new path for herself...a dangerous course that could lead to either triumph or utter ruin.

A Necessary Backstory, Strange Narration
Revisado: 02-06-20
It’s nice to have Sage’s backstory and wonderful to hear another tale of a strong woman bucking the conventions of a repressive culture. I love the first two books so much, Light Mage makes me want to go back and listen to the beginning of The Black Witch to relive where this story leaves off.
However, while the narration is better than Wandfasted (which I had to abandon because the narration was so distracting), the Light Mage talent uses what I find to be very annoying inflections at the end of many sentences. Even the very last sentence in the book ends with an upturn of tone that led me to anything but a sense of conclusion.
My hope is that for future releases they’ll stick with Whelan for Elloren’s story. And if there are more stories through the eyes of other characters, choose voice talent who can deliver the same ease of listening as she does.

Historia
Magic, romance, and adventure collide in Wandfasted, the irresistible prequel to The Black Witch: When they painted Heretics on our barn and set fire to it, I thought that was the worst it could get. Until they sent the dragons. But they didn't count on us having dragons of our own. And they certainly didn't count on Her. Our Great Mage. The Bringer of Fire. The Storm of Death. The Crow Sorceress. Our Deliverance. The Black Witch.

Distracting Narration Dulls the Story
Revisado: 02-04-20
I adore this series and am anxiously awaiting release of The Shadow Wand. The narrations by Julia Whelan in The Black Witch and The Iron Flower are near perfect and really bring the stories even more to life than the words already provide. But the narration of Wandfasted leaves much to be desired.
Phrases that are transitional are read as full sentences. Inflections at the end of sentences interrupt the flow. I've tried several times to relax past these and other distractions, but simply cannot. Seeing that The Rebel Mages isn’t re-recorded but compiled of the existing recordings, I’m moving on to The Light Mage. It’s not narrated by Whelan since the story is from Sage’s POV rather than Elloren’s, but hopefully, it will have a more pleasing flow.
I really want this backstory, so I’ll read Wandfasted the old fashioned way. I’m hopeful it will be well worth the time not spent multi-tasking.

One out of three women alive today, and one out of two men, will face a cancer diagnosis, according to the World Health Organization. Ty Bollinger takes this personally: in the course of a decade, he says, "I lost my entire family to cancer. I don't believe I had to lose them." The Truth about Cancer has been written for one simple reason: to share the knowledge we need to protect ourselves, treat ourselves, and in some cases save our lives or the lives of those we love.

Historia
Marianne Williamson is a best-selling author, a world-renowned teacher, and one of the most important spiritual voices of our time. In Tears to Triumph, she argues that we - as a culture and as individuals - have learned to avoid facing pain. By doing so we are neglecting the spiritual work of healing. Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it.

For All Who Struggle as We All Do
Revisado: 09-17-16
Before I even finished this book I recommended it to friends who are struggling with depression and other challenges in life. Marianne skillfully lays the foundation of difficult times, then builds upon it to Lovingly, with brutal honesty, describe what to expect in spiritual transformation while growing through the struggle. She very effectively pulls teachings from A Course Miracles, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism and other spiritual practices to illustrate her points, including why we struggle, how to begin changing our perspective of our struggles and why we should. And, her use of prayers throughout are a virtual toolkit for transformation. This book helped to make me aware of ways to improve my spiritual practice and become more aware of how Love reveals itself in my life. Wonderful teaching! Thank you, Marianne!
