A breath of fresh air
Revisado: 08-21-24
It is so rare to find an author that isn't bought and sold these days. Twain had an amazing ability to perfectly ration his storytelling with just the right amount of humor to keep it interesting. I feel as if Twain's insights have been transmitted subconsciously to the modern era. Not many writers would have the perception to realize that their works would still be valued by future generations. His insight into religion and politics is absolutely priceless. Grover Gardner is one of the best in the business.

Written in seclusion following the intense negative public reaction to the publication of his novel Pierre, The Piazza Tales is Herman Melville's accessible and entertaining collection of short stories and novellas concerning love, labor, and loss. The collection includes his three most important achievements in the genre of short fiction: the short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and the novellas Benito Cereno and The Encantadas.

Solid collection of Melville's shorter works
Revisado: 08-13-24
I was drawn into this collection when the opening story mentioned Mt. Greylock. I grew up in the Berkshires and can see Greylock from my house. Melville can be tediously formal and verbose sometimes, but the short story format forces the action along. Benito Cerino was a decent pirate story and Bartleby had some merit. The Lightning Rod Man gives me a deja vu feeling like I've heard it repeated in works by other authors. Narration was adequate.

Same old wishy washy lazy writing of Wells' later works.
Revisado: 08-08-24
Unfortunately another forgettable novel by an author that started out with a lot of potential. Once again the novel has a flimsy frame story but is really just a bunch of loosely connected essays about socialism. Jules Verne may have been old fashioned, but at least he had the finesse to spin a good yarn and leave the reader inspired. Wells' later catalog is all about quantity over quality. There were some interesting ideas and history, but mostly it's just the same old tedious random brainstorming.

Robert E. Howard, renowned creator of Conan the Barbarian, was also a master at conjuring tales of hair-raising horror. In a career spanning only 12 years, Howard wrote more than 100 stories, with his most celebrated work appearing in Weird Tales, the preeminent pulp magazine of the era.

Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 06-15-24
After listening to the Conan stories, I honestly thought REH was a bit shallow and somewhat of a hack. These horror stories were much better. I feel like this era had some of the best horror writers. It was past the era of the Victorian horror, which is hard to relate to these days, and before the age of the pc drivel infused horror stories of today. It is always nice to see an author redeemed. The best part for me were the theories of different ancient civilizations in the stories.

Legendary author, flawless narrations.
Revisado: 06-07-24
I really enjoy Tolstoy's straightforward storytelling. He doesn't try to hide his content with a lot of verbiage. Some of the stories have huge casts of characters, but they become more and more familiar as you read/listen over and over. Although there are some obscure novellas that didn't make the collection, it is by far the largest set I've found and a steal for the price. Considering all the wars still going on in the areas described in these stories, Tolstoy is as relevant today as ever.

Popular Lost Cities author David Hatcher Childress takes us into the amazing world of ancient technology, from computers in antiquity to the flying machines of the gods. Childress looks at the technology that was allegedly used in Atlantis and the theory that the Great Pyramid of Egypt was originally a gigantic power station. He examines tales of ancient flight and the technology that it involved; how the ancients used electricity; megalithic building techniques; the use of crystal lenses and the fire from the gods; and more.

Impossible not to find interesting
Revisado: 05-17-24
It was really interesting to hear Childress' viewpoints without the backdrop of the television series. I enjoyed all the quotes from famous minds throughout time. The fact that he quoted Will Durant resonated with me as I was very interested in The Story of Civilization series. He never tried to force people to agree with him but simply asked the questions and let the listener form their opinion. It is inspiring to take a fresh perspective on some of these age old mysteries and remember that the older civilizations created our world and we just imitated them.

One of the best things Audible has done
Revisado: 05-15-24
I came in skeptical, after experiencing some too good to be true collections that fell far short of the mark. This huge collection contains every work I know of by the author and even some very rare works. The narrations are consistent and professional especially considering the large number of Russian proper nouns. There is almost no missing content in the books like most large collections. The author is truly one of the greats and has a style that is engaging to modern readers. I found more than a few Stephen King influences throughout the collection.

Historia
The Star Rover is a 1914 collection of science fiction short stories with the theme of reincarnation. It tells the story of Darrell Standing, an inmate of San Quentin’s death row. The narrator escapes the horror of prison life by withdrawing into altered states and the memory of past lives. Forming the body of the work, the accounts of these past lives are vivid but disconnected. They include a desert island survival story, one which involves a Roman perspective on Christ, a tale of medieval Korea, and one which takes place in a prehistoric era.

Another forgotten classic from Jack London
Revisado: 03-16-24
Jack London always grabs your attention and keeps the action flowing. This novel was way ahead of its time and I can see influence on modern authors, notably Stephen King. Prison literature is always interesting because it takes people to a place they never want to go. This was a good transition from classics by Dumas, Dickens, Dostoyevsky, and Hugo with the more modern stories such as The Green Mile and Shawshank. The time traveling added a Sci-fi twist with plenty of social commentary.

Gumdrops and pixie dust drivel
Revisado: 03-16-24
I keep trying to find something by Bradbury that is captivating or intriguing, but have been disappointed so far. These stories are never convincing and are just this mindless stream of consciousness drivel. It is clear that he was paid by word count. The outlandish plots are really farcical and hard to even take seriously. I put him in the same league as O Henry for being readable but nothing spectacular. Good narrator but not much to work with.

Historia
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Exemplary Stephen King Novel
Revisado: 02-25-24
I really enjoyed giving this book a second listen and reading it simultaneously for the first time. Derry is where King crafts his best stories. I recently read a book about Roswell and this story captured the idea of aliens among us in a creative way. The low key narration was effective and gave the story some dignity. King approached an explosive issue with tact and a realistic outlook from the perspective of small town America.
