Historia
Join Fr. John R. Donahue, S.J., one of Catholicism's leading Mark experts, in exploring the Gospel of Action. Christianity was at a crossroads. The great apostles Peter and Paul had died. Members of the original Christian communities had passed. Jesus' word might also soon be buried and forgotten. But it was Mark's good news - not Matthew's - that saved the faith.

Respectfully disagree
Revisado: 04-15-21
My experience with this course was quite different from that of my fellow reviewer, who found the presentation boing. I find Fr. John Donahue a lively and engaging professor. A top New Testament scholar whose writings I have encountered in America magazine, Donahue brings real insight into these lectures. Perhaps my fellow reviewer was expected a professor book narrator, which Donahue clearly is not. You can get a sense for his presentation style through listening to the audio sample here. In any case, if you are interested in learning about Mark, Fr. Donahue's course is the best I have encountered.

Historia
Alexander the Great (ca. 356-323 BCE) was a Macedonian general who brought Greek civilization to the edge of modern-day India. After studying the Iliad, he believed himself to be Achilles reincarnated, imitating the hero of the epic poem in his own military campaigns. Even before he died barely into his 30s, the legends surrounding him were larger than life. In this compelling new audio course, you’ll explore the history and lore surrounding this real man and mythic figure, often by consulting the ancient sources themselves.

Great professor
Revisado: 01-22-21
Chris Bellitto is the history professor you wish you had in college. I've listed to a few of his Learn25 courses and enjoyed every one. In this series, he covers the life of Alexander the Great, a person who seems greater than life. Chris explores the big question about whether certain men or woman shape history or whether history unfolds according to larger forces. He helps interpret Alexander's accomplishments by placing them in the context of world historical events. A great story teller, in this series, Bellitto provides both scholarly insight and many stories of inspiring leadership.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman ever to serve on the US Supreme Court, was already a legendary lawyer before she ever became a federal judge. For many years, she brilliantly litigated gender discrimination cases, including several that reached the Supreme Court. In her later years, her legal victories and lifelong commitment to justice elevated her to the status of pop culture icon. In this engrossing 12-lecture audio series, Supreme Court expert David L. Hudson Jr. provides an inside look at Ginsburg’s life and career.

David Hudson, constitutional scholar and prolific author, is one of my favorite Learn25 professors, and this is one of his best audio courses. Much has been written about Ginsburg's jurisprudence. This series connects her distinctive biography - and passions - with your stunning legal accomplishments. Great course.

In this masterful audio series from Boston College theology professor Harvey Egan, S.J., you’ll focus on an often neglected aspect of the Apostle Paul’s genius - his mysticism. A mentee of Karl Rahner, Fr. Egan brings to this course the knowledge gained from a phenomenal 60 years of Jesuit spirituality and philosophical-theological studies. One of the world’s leading experts on Christian mysticism, he is the perfect guide for this course.

Insightful, scholarly, & engaging
Revisado: 01-20-21
Harvey Engan is one of the world's most respected mysticism experts. I found his survey course on Christian mysticism, also published by Learn25, to be excellent. With this course, Egan explores new dimensions of Paul's experience of God. Egan is clearly passionate about this topic, but his balances his enthusiasm with real scholarship. This course is a major contribution to our understanding of Paul. It is also inspiring.

I think he strikes the right balance between explaining the science well and making this series engaging with interesting stories.

You will meet the man who stopped Hitler’s atomic bomb, the pilots who won the Battle of Midway, the Soviet “Man of Steel”, the pacifist who built the bomb, and many more. How could ordinary citizens have brought themselves to perpetrate atrocities?

Outstanding history course
Revisado: 11-15-20
This audio course is both insightful and gripping. I have enjoyed several history courses by Learn25, and believe this is one of the very best. Bess has a knack for posing fascinating questions, the sort of questions that commanders, common soldiers, and policy makers actually faced on the battlefield and off. His description of the Battle of Midway is amazing. I can't recommend this course highly enough for history buffs.
