Historia
In this unique new history of the world's most ubiquitous language, linguistics expert David Crystal draws on words that best illustrate the huge variety of sources, influences, and events that have helped to shape our vernacular since the first definitively English word was written down in the fifth century ("roe", in case you are wondering). Featuring Latinate and Celtic words, weasel words and nonce-words, ancient words ("loaf") to cutting edge ("twittersphere") and spanning the indispensable words that shape our tongue ("and", "what") to the more fanciful ("fopdoodle"), Crystal takes us along the winding byways of language.

The book is exactly what it says it is & done well
Revisado: 02-25-23
A lovely trip through the history of the English language by looking at individual words, where they came from and how they've changed, and stories about them. Great for short listens, as only a few minutes can be given to each word, so there is almost always a close "stopping point" coming up. a fun approach to the language! The author reads his own work very clearly with a nice, occasionally dry, voice. Very glad I got it and listened!

A fun take on the myth
Revisado: 04-20-20
A fascinating and fun take spun off of the story of the Fisher King set in a world that is slightly current and slightly science fiction and a large dose of magic, with a royal quest sending knights out on electric motorcycles to find an object of power. It is a wonderful tale, told well, weaving together families and mysteries, feudal society and the modern world several decades in the future, old gods and young people discovering who they are, as well as ancient traditions kept alive, protective mothers, politics, not-so-secret societies, and enchantments. Very much worth the listen!

Historia
The fiefs that exist at the heart of the city of Elantra are home to sentient Towers that guard the world against the incursion of Shadow. But between the fiefs exists the gray world of the border zone. In it, geography changes between one passage across a border and the next. The rules of magic are different there - and yet somehow familiar to Kaylin Neya.

Another in a great series
Revisado: 02-19-20
If you are wanting to listen to this book, you are reading most likely to have listened to those that came before it, and know what to expect. Kaylin and many of the cast of characters reclaim a lost treasure from the borders between the fields, an academy lost when the fiefs and their towers were created. The world of Elantra is more and more being reclaimed from shadow, but each reclamation is an adventure, and claims it's own complicated price. if you've not read it listened to any of the other books, I suggest you do that first, as each unfolds in chronological order, some separated by days hours, and even minutes! This series is one long story, and while it gets better and better, it builds on what has gone before. This is great world-building, and the characters and world itself become like old and fascinating friends. Excellent read and listen!

A Song for Arbonne is Guy Gavriel Kay's critically acclaimed fantasy of love, both courtly and forbidden, and of kingdoms endlessly opposed - one dominated by male rulers and their male god, the other guided by women and their goddess.

A Masterfully Told Tale
Revisado: 01-26-19
Perhaps the best of Guy Gavriel Kay's works, this tale of knights and troubadors and two countries, one valuing war and misogyny, the other valuing women and romance and the art of song, and the first's war to crush and claim and "cleanse" the second, is narrated, and occasionally sung, beautifully. This, if you have even a trace of a romantic spirit within you, is not a book or performance to be missed!

Another Great Elantra Story
Revisado: 03-18-18
This is a great continuation of the great arc of the Chronicles of Elantra! This one is another adventure to the West March and back, bringing the cohort to Elantra. It does run heavy on politics and intrigue, and is obviously a setup for the next in the series which I suspect will be much more action-oriented, but it has a fair bit of action and suspense and gives us questions which should be resolved in the next book, and possibly another to follow. It hints at the possible coming climax of the entire story arc, so it shouldn't be skipped, even if politics and backstory aren't your thing, and there are at least cameos for almost all of favorite characters from past books. Something is waking....

Historia
It has been a busy few weeks for Private Kaylin Neva. In between angling for a promotion, sharing her room with the last living female Dragon, and dealing with more refugees than anyone knew what to do with, the unusual egg she'd been given began to hatch. Actually, that turned out to be lucky, because it absorbed the energy from the bomb that went off in her quarters. So now might be the perfect time to leave Elantra and journey to the West March with the Barrani. If not for the disappearances of citizens in the fief of Tiamaris - disappearances traced to the very Barrani Kaylin is about to be traveling with....

Great next book in the series!
Revisado: 11-22-12
Would you listen to Cast in Peril again? Why?
Cast In Peril is a great next step in the Chronicles of Elantra series by Michelle Sagara, and expanding from the familiar city to the West March. Familiar characters' histories are expanded, revealing and hinting at deeper strengths and weaknesses, and carrying the long story forward, leaving the listener anxiously awaiting the release of the next book.
What did you like best about this story?
The deepening development of many of the characters is a favorite part of each book in the series, and the revelations in this book are fascinating as they humanize non-human immortal characters, and illustrate the limitations of immortality and how the inflexibility of Names are both strength and weakness.
What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator is very good, and her voice characterizations are interesting -- I still have to chuckle at the Jamaican/African Leontine voices, which startled me with the first book, but which I have grown to appreciate as a good fit. She only rarely mispronounces a word, or uses an alternate pronunciation to that most familiar to me. She tells the story very well!

Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered— and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin….Since then, she's learned to read, she's learned to fight and she's become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she's made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.

This book is mostly good backstory and setting
Revisado: 03-28-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is mostly good backstory and setting for the series, introducing you to the main characters and serving as a necessary launch point for this very excellent series. I would, and have, heartily recommended the series to friends and acquaintances, and this book in particular as excellent set-up for the series. There is a good storyline and action in this book, which gets better and better as each new book is is read. Michelle Sagara creates a complex world in Elantra, and each book reveals more detail and complexity, often surprising the reader with sort-of reversals and tie-ins to previous books in the series that shed new and fascinating light on previous story elements that had seemed fully fleshed-out, and leave the reader thirsting for more. Characters and relationships evolve, and character relations and actions make excellent emotional
Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't think I've listened to Kristine Hvam's work before -- I am pretty happy with her performance on this book and series. There are a very few mispronunciations of English words, and some choices on character voices that I wouldn't have made (like a heavy Rastafarian/Jamaican accent for one race), but these all fade into the distant background as you listen. Ms. Hvam does an excellent job.

But after years of devastation, a handful of courageous men and women embark upon a dangerous crusade to overthrow their conquerors and bring back to the dark world the brilliance of a long-lost name: Tigana.

An excellent book by an excellent author
Revisado: 12-09-09
This is a rich, vibrant story of pride, conquest and revolution. The characters come to life, the action is balanced well with character development and the intricacy is well-balanced as well, adding to the depth rather than bogging the story down. While a few of the names are pronounced by the narrator in ways I wouldn't have personally, it isn't a terrible distraction. This is a highly recommended listen!
