Historia
The definitive account of Germany's malign transformation under Hitler's total rule and the implacable march to war. This magnificent second volume of Richard J. Evans's three-volume history of Nazi Germany was hailed by Benjamin Schwartz of The Atlantic Monthly as "the definitive English-language account... gripping and precise." It chronicles the incredible story of Germany's radical reshaping under Nazi rule.

Important reading for today
Revisado: 02-10-25
Masterful description of Germany between 1933 and 1939. Many lessons for today’s political situation. It feels like some of our present day politicians are repeating the assault on human decency.

Historia
Following the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek in 1949, after a bloody civil war, Mao hoisted the red flag over Beijing's Forbidden City, and the world watched as the Communist revolution began to wash away the old order. Due to the secrecy surrounding the country's records, little has been known before now about the eight years that followed, preceding the massive famine and Great Leap Forward. The Tragedy of Liberation bears witness to a shocking, largely untold history.

Historia
For five horrific weeks after Christmas in 1831, Jamaica was convulsed by an uprising of its enslaved people. What started as a peaceful labor strike quickly turned into a full-blown revolt, leaving hundreds of plantation houses in smoking ruins. By the time British troops had put down the rebels, more than a thousand Jamaicans lay dead from summary executions and extrajudicial murder. While the rebels lost their military gamble, their sacrifice accelerated the larger struggle for freedom in the British Atlantic.

Slave Rebellions were widespread
Revisado: 12-09-23
This is the fascinating history of a major slave rebellion in Jamaica that presaged major changes in the government of Great Britain and the abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean. Americans have been brainwashed into thinking slavery was docile and peaceful when it was anything but. We need more histories on slave rebellions so we can understand the real situation of enslaved Africans.

Historia
In December 2013, a young boy in a tiny West African village contracted the deadly Ebola virus. The virus spread to his relatives, then to neighboring communities, then across international borders. The world's first urban Ebola outbreak quickly overwhelmed the global health system and threatened to kill millions. In an increasingly interconnected world in which everyone is one or two flights away from New York or London or Beijing, even a localized epidemic can become a pandemic. Ebola's spread sounded global alarms that the next killer outbreak is right around the corner.

Revisado: 02-26-23
It’s hard to believe that a book published a few years ago when we had never heard of Covid19 would be so interesting. The major Ebola outbreak in West Africa has many lessons for now and in our future. For example, what if the president when Covid appeared had called together all our “tribal“ leaders and shown them the facts about Covid and gotten them on board? Hundreds of thousands of American lives would have been saved.

Revisado: 02-18-23
This book provides an internal look at how some people, in this case, Donald Trump, get away with the kinds of illegal actions that ordinary people never would. In this case, Pomerance and his legal colleagues systematically and carefully build a brilliant case against Trump but are not allowed to charge it. Read this book!

A warning
Revisado: 02-03-23
Ebola is one of the nightmare diseases, present in the heavy jungles of central Africa, crossing over to humans periodically through interactions with reservoir hosts. This book tells that story from one woefully inadequate clinic in Western Africa. Genuine love and humanitarianism on the part of the African doctors and nurses, as much as they lack the resources to treat and save patients, shines.

Historia
The gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico’s powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren’t often connected in our heated discussions of gun control - but they should be. In Ioan Grillo’s groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth.

Grillo lays out the way that Mexican cartels and criminal gangs acquire their weapons—from the US. Mexican society has been devastated by the cartels and we play an important role in causing this destruction because of our lax gun laws and week enforcement.

Historia
The Mexican drug trade has inspired prejudiced narratives of a war between north and south, White and Brown; between noble cops and vicious kingpins, corrupt politicians and powerful cartels. In this first comprehensive history of the trade, historian Benjamin T. Smith tells the real story of how and why this one-peaceful industry turned violent. He uncovers its origins and explains how this illicit business essentially built modern Mexico, affecting everything from agriculture to medicine to economics - and the country’s all-important relationship with the United States.

I live on the US Mexico border. This excellent history lays out the growth of the narco industry over time, and how it is intertwined with the growth of the Mexican state and its political and law enforcement systems. The anarchic and deadly social space in Mexico and the US’ role in creating it is frightening. It’s happening here as well, with a huge footprint in the US. The book is terrifying. Excellent read.

They Want to Kill Americans is the first detailed look into the heart of the active Trump-led insurgency, setting the stage for a second nation-wide rebellion on American soil. This is a chilling and deeply researched early warning to the nation from a counterterrorism intelligence professional: America is primed for a possible explosive wave of terrorist attacks and armed confrontations that aim to bring about a Donald Trump led dictatorship.

They do want to kill Americans
Revisado: 10-30-22
Excellent description of the history of today’s right wing shock troops. Very detailed and a strong warning to the rest of us who are reality based. There is more to the groups who invaded the capitol on J6, and they are more dangerous than we think. Nance is a clear and cogent writer and backs it up with facts and sources. Read this book.
