What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories.

Revisado: 04-17-25
Highly recommended to understand the nature of inequality and challenges that modern democracies snd capitalism faces, many ideas that Piketty were subconsciously rooted in my mind. Glad to get a data-backed opinion from the expert of the field.

Excellent book that changes perspective about policy recommendations by classical economists
Revisado: 02-01-25
This books gives a description of practical roadmaps that successful east asian countries have used to break the American and European economic hegemony and attain an indomitable status in the world. It also describes the issues with Malaysia, and much worse Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines. Book is a little dense and compact, so don’t expect to breeze through it.

Gives a fresh perspective of How world really works
Revisado: 01-17-25
This book is packed with information, facts, and numbers (which is a bit overwhelming and sometimes dilutes the message ).After reading it, one might view the restrictions on natural resources and trade-offs involving fossil fuels as almost like a game of Legos. As per the author , modern development has four fundamental and vital components : 1) ammonia nitrate, 2) steel, 3) plastic, and 4) concrete. The book begins and ends with the statement: “I am not an optimist or pessimist but a scientist.”
It is an important read for anyone mesmerized by the semiconductor-electronic world and believes humanity can replicate the tremendous speed of upgrades seen in the electronics sector. The book discusses risks to humanity and their probabilities, concluding that while we can model events that occur once in a generation or once in 1,000 years, we cannot model once-in-100,000-year events, such as an asteroid hitting Earth or a massive geomagnetic storm caused by the Sun’s corona.
The author takes a swipe at the overly optimistic “science-will-change-everything” mindset and explicitly mocks Yuval Noah Harari’s Homo Deus (which almost potrays that man will acquire divine god like power) before turning his critique toward calamity-mongers. It is a good read for understanding the material constraints that shape our world and reality of material world.

Historia
Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo have pioneered the use of randomized control trials in development economics. Work based on these principles, supervised by the Poverty Action Lab, is being carried out in dozens of countries. Drawing on this and their 15 years of research from Chile to India, Kenya to Indonesia, they have identified wholly new aspects of the behavior of poor people, their needs, and the way that aid or financial investment can affect their lives. Their work defies certain presumptions: that microfinance is a cure-all, that schooling equals learning....

Amazing story line to explain ideas
Revisado: 01-10-25
Like the way authors presented their study in various parts of the world in RCTs.
One thing that their research needs to cover is how to deal with limited pie that poor has to share. For example, deworming a child will help them gain 20% more income BUT if all kids are dewormed, all of them will NOT have a 20% jump in income.

A breadth of system examples to teach about the Systems Analysis
Revisado: 12-30-24
Very nicely written to give an insight into how systems work and how they can be made better. The writing is good but sometimes drifts at length making it hard to correlate as to “what was the original discussion?”. However, the author does a good job by bringing back to her point.

Good to hear so many cases to drive the point
Revisado: 11-05-24
While it is good to see a comprehensive coverage from various angles, the author conveniently ignores the current role of US and Western Europe in derailing the efforts in many developing countries. There are well documented CIA declassified documents which shows that US plays a big role in supporting dictatorships to advance its interest but the author never brings it up, instead focuses on foreign meddling examples of Germany and Japan.

Alan Blinder, one of the world's most influential economists and one of the field's best writers, draws on his deep firsthand experience to provide an authoritative account of sixty years of monetary and fiscal policy in the United States. Spanning twelve presidents, from John F. Kennedy to Joe Biden, and eight Federal Reserve chairs, from William McChesney Martin to Jerome Powell, this is an insider's story of macroeconomic policy that hasn't been told before—one that is a pleasure to listen to, and as interesting as it is important.

Considered to be one of the most important philosophical works of all time, the History of Western Philosophy is a dazzlingly unique exploration of the ideologies of significant philosophers throughout the ages - from Plato and Aristotle through to Spinoza, Kant and the 20th century. Written by a man who changed the history of philosophy himself, this is an account that has never been rivaled since its first publication over 60 years ago.

Less descriptive more Analytic
Revisado: 08-09-24
Historical background and life of philosopher was nicely covered but the wholistic description of philosophy especially how the philosopher connects their basic ideas to advance idea is missing. As such, this is not a book for elementary philosophy students, instead the listener need to have good overview of various philosopher’s work before listening to this book. Also, sometimes I found Dr. Russel’s Analysis highly critical and very unintuitive and hard to grasp.
