Historia
The Cold War was a crucial conflict in American history. At stake was whether the world would be dominated by the forces of totalitarianism led by the Soviet Union, or inspired by the principles of economic and political freedom embodied in the United States. The Cold War established America as the leader of the free world and a global superpower. It shaped US military strategy, economic policy, and domestic politics for nearly 50 years.

Historia
This global history as the Chinese would write it gives brilliant and unconventional insights for understanding China's role in the world, especially the drive to "Make China Great Again." In this colorful, informative story filled with fascinating characters, epic battles, influential thinkers, and decisive moments, we come to understand how the Chinese view their own history and how its narrative is distinctly different from that of Western civilization.

Supported intent: quick primer on full span of Chinese history
Revisado: 01-21-24
Sufficiently thorough and stiched- together-threads to give me a primer on Chinese history within the context of geopolitical objectives. I'd read a couple of 20th and 21st-century-focused books on China ( Young China; Confusious Never Said; Hundred Year Marathon), but didn't take any Chinese history in college so was feeling the gaps. Very accessible at 2x speed which is mine norm for audible.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

cruelty of apartheid, absurdity of lracial labels
Revisado: 06-22-22
My takeaways: Apartheid was even worse than I thought; racial labels are hazardous in ways one could never imagine; racism is evil but be careful that approaches to addressing it dont reinforce it by mistake.

Historia
Defense expert Seth Jones argues that the US is woefully unprepared for the future of global competition. While America has focused on building fighter jets, missiles, and conventional warfighting capabilities, its three principal rivals - Russia, Iran, and China - have increasingly adopted irregular warfare: cyber attacks, the use of proxy forces, propaganda, espionage, and disinformation to undermine American power. Jones details the key steps the United States must take to alter how it thinks about - and engages in - competition before it is too late.

Learned quite a bit and was reminded of a lot Presentation of the pieces via historical profiles of three global actors provides a constructive whole...if you can stow your biases and political loyalties - no US administraition of the last 50 years avoids critique. Also well written and read for audio consumption (x1.55 worked well for me).

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Vivid, superb writing, not 100% sad
Revisado: 01-09-22
Perhaps perfect for audiobook...? I might have put it down and not picked it up again (who wants to read about a plague during a pandemic or a long drawn out story about the loss of a child?). I didn't *have* to read it before our book club meeting! However, the audio performance was superb (1.55x was perfect; my norm is 1.3x) and the scene and characters came to life effortlessly, with at least 50% of them lovable. The story does not trivialize nor does it wallow - I feared the latter. Kleenex required still. The excellent writing also made the repeated step-backs in time easy to track.

Historia
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Historia
The real collusion in the 2016 election was not between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. It was between the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration. The media-Democrat “collusion narrative”, which paints Donald Trump as cat’s paw of Russia, is a studiously crafted illusion. Despite Clinton’s commanding lead in the polls, hyper-partisan intelligence officials decided they needed an “insurance policy” against a Trump presidency.

The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.
