The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

Historia
At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes' still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only 3,000 years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion - and indeed our future.

Historia
To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions. Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline. Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life. Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame. In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever.

Thought it was about stoicism but it’s much more
Revisado: 11-14-22
Ryan brings in real stories about real people we’ve all heard of like Queen Elizabeth and Lou Gehrig. The cool thing is the deep dive into their lives that bring a completely diff light on what they experienced. I usually do not get inspired by other people’s troubles and don’t think “it could be worse,” it’s bad for me, it feels terrible for me, I don’t care to compare. But the way Ryan articulates each chapter made me feel inspired and motivated to take action rather than simply share quotes.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Are you tired of feeling f*cked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unf--ked version of yourself. "Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." It isn't other people that are standing in your way; it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive. It's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

“You are not what you think.”
Counter intuitive and totally true. This book will get you off your butt and realize all the dumb stuff you’ve been saying to yourself - no, not that stuff, the stuff you don’t even realize you’re saying to yourself.

Terrible narrator
Revisado: 06-22-17
When I literally read Badass 2, I had the screaming, cool, chill, clever author in my head telling me these stories. With this audiobook version of Badass (one), a robotic, monotone, boring person reads the story like the evidence in a court case. This is what Siri sounds like when she's been asked the same question 600 times by a 5 year old. I have HOURS left of this book and I just can't do it.

Historia
Decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lamented that English settlers were constantly fleeing over to the Indians - but Indians almost never did the same. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. The most recent example of that attraction is combat veterans who come home to find themselves missing the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life.

Call to action
Revisado: 06-22-17
I love the insight this book provides. It definitely gets you into the mind of and creates a feeling of empathy for those struggling with PTSD and even loneliness. I think what this book is missing is a final chapter on a call to action. After learning all of these things, now what? What do we do to create a more loving, communal, and sharing society without giving up individualism, technology, and personal goals?

Update on everything GV
Revisado: 03-27-16
This was a really cool experience - walking the dogs every morning listening with my headphones in. Sometimes there would be brand new answers or questions that I missed after watching all the askgaryvee show episodes and sometimes - which was my favorite - I knew the answer before he said it. While that may sound like I didn't get anything new, every single question and answer was the kick in the pants I need in the morning!

Historia
The Thank You Economy is about something big, something greater than any single revolutionary platform. It isn't some abstract concept or wacky business strategy—it's real, and every one of us is doing business in it every day, whether we choose to recognize it or not. It's the way we communicate, the way we buy and sell, the way businesses and consumers interact online and offline.

This book has changed my life. It's so easy when Gary lays it out, I feel like I should have been doing this stuff my whole life. When I think back, every mentor I've loved has used these principles before Gary gave me a blueprint for it.
